Bug Description

Binary package hint: splix

This is on Ubuntu 9.10 with splix-2.0.0-2ubuntu2. I went to fedex.com to generate a prepaid shipping paper and was unable to print the output from my browser. I then tried to print to a file, saved it as a PDF, opened it as a PDF using the default Document Viewer (Evince, I believe), and tried printing from there unsuccessfully. However, printing a test page and other PDFs work fine. It is this particular PDF.

Can you send the PDF directly to CUPS by running

lpr <PDF file name>

in a terminal window? Or could you install "okular", open the file with "okular" and print it from there?

Can you also follow the instructions in the "CUPS error_log" section of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems, try to print from evince again and post the error_log which you get then? Thanks.

I cleared out my error_log, increased the debug level per the wiki, and tried printing again. Attached is the error_log.

Briefly, me too. Some pdfs print, others fail when using Evince. Printing from OpenOffice and Gimp is fine.

Okular, as suggested above did succeed in printing one of the problem pdfs. lpr filename.pdf failed

Ubuntu 9.10 both 32 and 64 bit systems. Will look into this further and attach error logs soon... (The print troubleshooter is running very slowly, and it is bedtime already!)

Got some kind of trouble then try to print png image (Samsung ML-1640 printer). Victor's log:

> E [10/Nov/2009:23:41:07 -0600] [Job 136] SpliX Error while rendering the request. Check the previous message

lead me to think - my problem is from same source:

E [26/Dec/2009:12:34:17 +0200] [Job 20] SpliX Cannot open job
E [26/Dec/2009:12:34:17 +0200] [Job 20] SpliX Error while rendering the request. Check the previous message
E [26/Dec/2009:12:34:17 +0200] [Job 20] Job stopped due to filter errors; please consult the error_log file for details.

I looked in /tmp and find some files with gs_* names and lp user owner (and lp group), having -rw------- (600) file permissions. This files seems was created by CUPS subsystem (filter).

Changing file permission on non-zero sized gs_* file and opening it in pdf viewer allowed me to get image printed, but this is "crutch" :)

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+bug/537970 take a look at this bug. I think it might be related to splix rather than evince. If it is, I will try to join the two perhaphs?

Problem is Ghostscript, not SpliX. Please update your Lucid system so that you are completely up-to-date. Then try printing again. If this still does not help your problem can be a duplicate of bug #539708.

Can everyone please update their Lucid system, test, and report whether the problem goes away? Thanks.

I don't have this particular PDF any more, but I haven't seen the problem in a while, so I guess it has been fixed.

Please report new bugs and attach the input files and follow the instructions of the "error_log" and "Capturing print job data" sections of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems and attach appropriate files to your new bug report.
