I have downgraded to the previous kernel, and the problem has gone away. The attached information (lspci-vnvn.log, dmesg.log, and version.log) are done on the working kernel. The "ubuntu-bug -p linux" command was also done on the working kernel.

Hi DaneM,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 479813

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for taking the time to deal with this bug.

As soon as my wife's laptop is available to me for testing, I'll let
you know if this is still an issue. (This will probably be at the end
of the spring semester, or in other words, at the beginning of summer,
as she is in grad. school.)

Thanks.

Sorry for the late reply. I'm just writing to confirm that as of 10.04, the problem seems to have been resolved. I didn't try other versions than what I've mentioned. Thanks for all you do!

Awakening a necro thread here but as of 12.04 the problem has re-appeared.

I have a ping window open and after increasing the network traffic for a bit longer everything stops.

I can solve it by either disconnecting/reconnecting via network manager or the wifi switch on laptop.

Christopher, I don't know if this last action is premature, since Bryan Paddock evidently has the same problems with version 12.04. As I no longer have access to the laptop in question, I cannot confirm whether there has been a regression since my last post.

Bryan, can you perhaps clarify whether this problem still exists (or exists again) with all updates? I'm not personally qualified to say whether the technical details are identical between your case and mine, but I suspect that someone with more knowledge than I have could do so.

I'm leaving this as "invalid" unless reason to change the status is provided.

Hi there,

Well I have managed to narrow it down and can only reproduce it with XBMC, not any other means.

It handles copying large files no problem. It's reproducible every time when watching videos over network via XBMC.

All wifi activity stops. Everything is fine - the connection is up, my server gateway route is still set - alas no pings not even to local network.

I wouldn't imagine XBMC has that kind of control over the wifi?

Re-connecting to wifi network is only cure.

I haven't tested it with the latest update - I shall do that tonight and post results tomorrow.

DaneM, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/479813/comments/9 is not premature because this bug is reported by you, not him.

Bryan Paddock, if you are having a problem in Ubuntu, please file a new report by executing the following via the Terminal and feel free to subscribe me to it:
ubuntu-bug linux

Thanks!
