Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

When visual effects are turned on (System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Visual Effects) the flash player in the browser cannot play any movie related content from the BBC website.

Changing the visual effects to "None" allows this content to play normally.

I downloaded the latest 64bit version of Adobe Flash player and can state that it _doesn't_ fix this issue, so it is not due to the wrapper.

There are no javascript errors produced at the console, at least none that differ from the "none" to the "normal" or "best" settings when running the page.

Also of note (possibly) is the fact that this doesn't work on the CBBC website http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/ there is a "handle" at the top to randomly select sub-sites which doesn't pull if you are in anything other than "none".

I downloaded the latest 64bit version of Adobe Flash player and can state
that it _doesn't_ fix this issue, so it is not due to the 32bit wrapper.

There are no errors produced at the firefox error console, at least none
that differ from the "none" to the "normal" or "best" settings when running
the page.

Also of note (possibly) is the fact that this doesn't work on the CBBC
website http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/ there is a "handle" at the top to
randomly select sub-sites which doesn't pull if you are in anything other
than "none", which may be accessible even if you aren't in the UK.

Further to the last try ... the 64 bit version _does_ fix it, but you have to make sure that all previous versions of flash player are removed.

http://reformedmusings.wordpress.com/2009/07/03/installing-64-bit-adobe-flash-support-into-ubuntu-jaunty-9-04/

I'm assuming that although i downloaded the flash-player for x64, and rm'd the libflashplayer.so files that the nswrapper-plugin was still trying to control the flash delivery.

Running the original script that removed the nswrapper-plugin fixed the problem for me, but of course removed adobe-reader, which i used ... adding adobe-reader back on reinstalled the nswrapper-plugin script, but the problem did not reappear.

My kids are happy that they can now access the BBC properly.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been several updates to Firefox since you filed this report. Could you please try to reproduce this bug with the latest version of Firefox and the latest version of Flash from the official Ubuntu repositories and let us know if this is still a problem?

The video player is working fine for me with Compiz effects turned on and Flash installed from the official Ubuntu repositories.

Changed in firefox (Ubuntu):

Unfortunately it's not fixed it.

root@laptop:/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins# mv libflashplayer.so

Download done.
Flash Plugin installed.

go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/ and pull on the lever to the left hand side
of the top icon bar (this should change the items like an old fashioned one
armed bandit) ...

no changes ...

I'm not sure if it helps, but I have an "nVidia Corporation G96 [GeForce
9600M GS]" (recommended driver 185 from the hardware drivers menu) graphic
card, I'm running in "normal" mode, my firefox is 3.5.8 and my OS is as
follows:

root@laptop:~# uname -a

root@laptop:~# file /sbin/init

Thank you for the extra information. With Flash installed from the official Ubuntu repositories, are you able to play videos on sites such as YouTube? The problem you are experiencing with the "lever" may be a bug that is known to exist on 64-bit systems using the official Flash package from the repositories (bug 410407). If that does seem to be the problem when you are using the supported Flash package, then the third workaround on the report for bug 410407 should resolve the issue for you.

That does appear to be the problem more than anything ... I believe it's all
down to the Flash scripting because sites like the BBC one use a lot of
that, it's been a long time since i've checked if youtube works ok, I
believe it did from the beginning.

I will try the "gksudo gedit /usr/lib/nspluginwrapper/i386/linux/npviewer

Then add: export GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1 before the last line of text" next
time I'm at home and see if it fixes it.

What harm can the above GTK flag do in the npviewer file?

I remotely accessed the home computer, the GDK flag fixed the issue for me, thanks.

this fixes the iPlayer desktop issue for me (32bit AIR/64bit Flash incompatibilty) ... so I shall leave it working with flashplugin-installer one now.

Good, I'm glad that resolved the issue for you! The problem is believed to be an issue with GTK and Flash elements not properly communicating with one another. The workaround resolves the issue, but it does not fix the underlying problem, which is why it has not been released as a patch. Since that workaround resolved the issue for you, I'm going to mark this report as a duplicate of bug 410407. If you find that this really is not the same bug, then please feel free to comment on here and we can try to figure out the issue. Otherwise, all further comments should take place on the bug 410407 report. Thanks again for reporting this issue, and please continue to let us know about any other bugs you find!
