Dragging things to icons on Docky doesn't open the respective application

Bug Description

Oftentimes I want to drag some data from one application to another, and when the former obfuscates the latter, I usually drag the data to the taskbar entry of the other application, which then opens so I can drop it there. (For example, the specific case that led me to file this bug was dragging a video file from a file manager window to the Pitivi window.)

Docky, however, doesn't support this. While it's nice to be able to drop a file onto an application icon, it would be appreciated if, when floating the file over the icon for a few seconds, that application could be brought to the front if it's open so I can drop it there.

Has this been fixed/implemented?

I've attached a sceenshot detailing what could happen.

When you drag a file over an icon that has multiple windows open and hover over it for a second or two the list of open windows appears and then you can drag it to the one that you want.

Antonio, if you look at the bugreport then you can see that it has been implemented (but not released yet - I suppose you could check out a daily build of Docky for that).

Uh, I think Chris was drunk or on his pain killers when he marked this fixed. AFAIK (from testing it right now) this is NOT implemented in Docky 2.

I'm using 2.0.0 Alpha 1 r1101 and can't find this feature. I can draw up a list of windows by right-clicking on the File Manager, but it doesn't work when I drag an icon/document over it

Ah, that solves that mystery! Are there any plans to implement this?

joining in. this would be really a great feature.
right now it is really hard to add e.g. attachments to emails, drag files to skype or to a folder...

Every user agree it's a useful feature. Event the Gnome Tack bar have it working. But there isn't any interest from the developers about it.

If there was no interest from the developers then we would mark it WontFix (trust me, I love marking things WontFix because thats one less bug I have to think about).

Please do not guess what we are/are not interested in doing. We all happen to be quite busy so we have to prioritize things, and this is not (for me) a high priority wishlist item.

If a developer can give me an idea of what classes I need to work in to implement this, I would try and implement it myself, although I can't promise anything.

Currently when you drag and hover over an application dock item and wait 1,5 seconds (thumb suck delay) with the mouse down, it will behave the same as a mouse scroll on the dock item.

After getting feedback from developers, I will attempt to have the "drag event" open up other instances if the dock item has more than one instance of the application open. (i.e: as if the user did consecutive mouse scrolls 1.5 seconds apart.)

I am running the PPA version of Docky (Version: 2.1.0~bzr1323-0ubuntu1~9.10~dockycore1)
I guess rev 1323 includes what Craig implemented (>rev 1220)

However, when I drag a file from a File Roller archive to my Nautilus instance icon, nothing pops up, even after waiting 1,5 second.
I also tried with a piece of text from Firefox to Gedit. The icons are pushed aside but nothing happens.

Can someone confirm the Fix Released status please ?
Many thanks !

I find that I have to drag it into Docky, move it amongst the icons a bit, and then come back to the icon I want to spring up. Don't know why this happens, but now at least I can use this functionality.

If you drag into Docky and then drag out and back in again it works.
Some later change might have caused a regression.

@Mathieu
Dragging text and "things" that aren't files doesn't seem to work and I don't think that it ever did.
It seems that it only works for files being dragged into docky.

Great ! At last we can use this feature !
Congrats Craig !

It seems to work for anything in version 2.1.0~bzr1327 !
(it would have been odd to have mimetype specific code...)

Thanks :)
I still don't like the fact that one needs to re-enter the dock for it to
work properly ...
I'll set up my dev environment again sometime and fix it.
