In Karmic kernel 2.6.31-14 the same thing happens, but in Jaunty kernel 2.6.28-14 I get a mounting problem message on a specific floppy (attached). I'm able to mount other floppies afterwards with no problems in Jaunty.

The Firefox window stayed on the 'Almost Finished' window does that mean there's a new bug in apport ?

If you entered this command

sudo apport-collect -p linux 475500

correctly, it should have collected a lot of info attaching them to this bug report, it doesn't open another one.

I think something went wrong because it didn't attach anything.

Did you wait until the end or did you stop the operation?
'Almost finished' means it hasn't finished yet.

Sergio. I've just run the command a second time and the output was as shown in #9 above. This time no Firefox window was launched. There's something else not right here if you haven't received the info. I've rebooted a couple of times since my last attempt at the command (my default OS in 9.04). If you require additional info please let me know. When using the command there is a floppy in the drive and I can use floppies fine in 9.04.

Remember I need you run the command from Karmic, not from Jaunty.

I suggest you to redo it and wait more time, this procedure is a bit long.

Sergio. As you can see in post #12 above I've again run your command 'sudo apport-collect -p linux 475500' as requested (without quotes).
Just to clarify. I run a number of versions of Ubuntu. The version with the problem is Lucid Lynx. The installation was a clean install of Karmic, which was upgraded by changing all the software sources to Lucid (using details posted on the Ubuntu forums). The most recent update/upgrade was yesterday afternoon (UK time) via the Main Server. Every time I've run you command it's been done with Lucid Lynx running. I cut and pasted your command into terminal. Included in the terminal output each and every time was
hook /usr/share/apport/package-hooks//source_linux-meta.py crashed:
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/apport/report.py", line 637, in add_hooks_info
    symb['add_info'](self, ui)
  File "/usr/share/apport/package-hooks//source_linux-meta.py", line 25, in add_info
The first time I ran the command, a Firefox window opened and 'Almost Finished' was displayed but just sat there. The second and third times no Firefox window opened and then terminal just went to the command prompt:
sudo apport-collect -p linux 475500
[sudo] password for kevin:

I left the computer for 20 minutes and no Firefox window was displayed and nothing else happened.
How do you want me to proceed ?
Please advise as something is fried here...

In comment #4 you wrote it's an issue with Karmic too.
Do you confirm it?

About apport-collect problem, it's an apport bug in Lucid.

Please open a terminal and report here the result of giving this two commands:

gvfs-mount -d /dev/fd0

and

sudo gvfs-mount -d /dev/fd0

After that, attach here udev log present in /var/log/udev and the result of these other two commands:

ls -l /dev/fd0

and

dmesg

Thank you.

The problem occurs in the Sunday daily build of Lucid. I've re-installed Lucid since the original post and these logs/commands are from this latest install. Kernel is still the same.

Sergio. I've just noticed that the floppy desktop icon has now appeared. It must be that initially something is not set up correctly (see attached screenshot). If I click on Floppy drive in Nautilus, the message 'Unable to mount location' , 'No medium in the drive' is displayed. If I click on floppy0 Nautilus shows the contents of my floppy drive.
If I go to Places-Removable Media-Floppy Drive the drive makes a noise as if it attempts to access the drive (an initial click).
In Places-Removable media there is now floppy0 at the bottom of the list and accessing this displays the contents of the floppy.
I only have one floppy disk drive on this PC.

@KevinM

You saw it because you had mounted floppy with the command:
sudo gvfs-mount -d /dev/fd0
