Bug Description

Ubuntu 9.10 - Intel HD using the VIA VT1828S audio chipset. The Asus P7P55D motherboard input doesn't work and I cannot record anything. I have a second mic on the front panel and this isn't even picked up by the OS, but it works in Windows XP.

I just updated to Ubuntu 10.04 and I tried the same fix using linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic. Unfortunately it hasn't worked. Alsamixer displays the chip "VIA ID 4441" instead of "VIA VT1828S" and I can neither get any input from the mic nor set the output to 5.1 surround. I'm limited to Off, Stereo Input, Stereo Output, Stereo Duplex.

Thomas, I've done everything that you've described, but the microphone does not work in Teamspeak or Skype. Did you have to change anything in alsamixer or kmix such as input source to get the microphone to work? Did you use another program to test the microphone?

Thomas-I can only echo what Clif had to say-exactly the same results. I
followed your instructions and only resulted in losing all audio. I then
reversed the process, now I'm back where I started. I think this mobo
has a different sound card that linux drivers just aren't available yet.
I think I just might RMA this board: Asus P7P55D-E and get something by
Gigabyte instead. I understand they support Linux pretty well; I've got
to do some more research. I'm really disappointed in Asus-their tech
support sure doesn't meet the standards I was led to expect. I feel they
no longer care to support Linux- during 1 contact I made the guy I
talked to actually said I had psu. He obviously just didn't to deal with
my issue. (the built-in network card lost all contact with my isp
[qwest] and after spending 1 1/2 hrs. with them I came to realize I had
a hardware problem. The only way I was able to re-connect was to
completely remove all power to my machine! Just shutting down the normal
way didn't work. This has happened twice.)
Thanks for letting me sound off and trying to help me with this
issue. I'm passing on this info in case somebody else with the same or
similar board might benefit.

I'm afraid I don't know what else to tell you guys. Sound in Linux has always been pretty hit and miss for me as well, but this particular issue I was able to fix pretty easily, both in Karmic and Lucid, using the aforementioned procedure.

Only other advice I can give, is that perhaps you should consider posting your problem in ubuntuforums.org. Hopefully someone more expert than myself will see it and be in a better position to help you. This thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449) is a useful starting point.

I've just installed 10.04 and I have no sound either. I spent most of today trying to get his to work. I managed to get the correct chipset (VIA VT1828S) recognised properly by manually compiling the alsa-driver to the latest one (1.0.23). I even purged and reinstalled the alsa components: sudo aptitude --purge linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils linux-image-`uname -r` linux-ubuntu-modules-`uname -r` libasound2 as specified here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting.
Here's the audio info I logged on the Alsa project site:
http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=560916444b5daefac4eb85d7ee00072547483eb7
I can only imagine there is something broken within the Ubuntu desktop since the live 10.04 AMD-64 CD sound works fine and I can see the hardware listed in the Sound Preferences whereas it is blank in the hard disk installed version and no panel icon shown. I also notice I get the standard drum sound just before logging in, but after logging in I get no sound anywhere.

It is really disappointing that the latest version of Ubuntu has taken a backward step since the previous version worked by using the backport fix. More effort should be spent on making sure fundamental components like audio work on well known motherboards such as Asus. I'm going back to 9.10 - no point having an OS installed with no sound.

Being said, i can pull out the microphone jack half way so there is some kind of "sortning" of the jack plug and i'm able to make sound into the microphone. There is also static in the recording if i try to record. To me it seems like a configuration problem with the module.

Just wondering why the linux-backports-modules-XXX packages aren't installed by default.
I'm assuming that the Ubuntu Kernel team has put a lot of work into porting them to the Ubuntu release kernels.
It seems a shame for users to encounter problems that already have a fix.

Hi,

@danrgmc,

I've the same MoBo as you : P7P55D-E from Asus. Using Ubuntu 10.4 (Lucid, AMD64 version) I did have the same issue : sound input (microphone) did not work at all.

Installing the backport as stated in the first answer, i.e. "linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic", then reboot, then I had to configure the sound service properly (using the GUI, when you clic on the speaker, usually on the top right of the desktop -> Settings, because the input was disabled by the software, i.e. PulseAudio had the mic disabled by default).

All this steps solved the issue for me.

Hi Yannick, Thank you very much for your response. I finally got my
sound input working by following the steps you outlined here. Have you
had any other issues with your Mobo? I rma'd mine once due to losing my
ethernet link between the mobo & modem. This happens very
infrequently-maybe once a month. The only way I've found t...

Worked here, too. Thanks all.
However, seeing that synaptic wants to deinstall ubuntu-desktop as well gave me the heebie jeebies. Worked fine, though. Just letting you know.

I'd like to thank you too Yannick.
I had the same issue now everything seems to be working fine.

Sorry, it doesn't work. I followed the instructions very carefully. I purged
the alsa-base and pulseaudio programs then installed the backports module
for alsa as suggested. After the backports modules were installed I got
sound from everything, but I couldn't record and the Sound function didn't
work under Preferences. When I reinstalled alsa-base and pulseaudio I only
got sound from Gnome desktop functions and there was no sound from Rhythmbox
or other applications with audio. I just think this release (10.04) is crap
and not enough testing was done before the release. I've wasted too much
time messing about on this problem when I could have done something else
more useful. Very disappointed to be honest. Going back to 9.10 now.

Hi!

The problem affects me too on Lucid (amd64) and the instructions above didn't solve my microphone problem.
So I searched at the ALSA bugtracker https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/my_view_page.php and found a solution.
=> Bug No. 5130

First of course install linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic (and restart), after that use kmix to unmute all channels, both capture channels switched to record and both input sources to Mic. (under mixer "HDA Intel")
Then go to the second mixer tab of kmix "HD-Audio Generic" and *mute* IEC958 (also called 5.1 Smart), that does the trick.
(You can also use alsamixer, ...)

The "HD-Audio Generic" 5.1 Smart Channel IEC958 is a wrong detection of the hda-intel driver, so the mic and other channels will be relinked to the wrong place. (further details in the ALSA bugtracker).

Front mic + speaker are also working => make sure that the front channel is not muted and Input Source 2 switched to Front Mic.

Best regards, Bernhard
