With or without the NVIDIA driver installed the system while booting appears to initially detect and display the correct resolution 1920x1200 but late in the boot-process it reverts (regardless of correct and trouble-free procedure for saving) to 1280x1024

The problem existed with previous versions of Ubuntu and also with Mint.

The problem does not exist when I run Sabayon with exactly the same hardware.

Have two different monitors so the bug is with near enough certainty independent of this component.

The identical problem appears to exist when I run other Debian based distros (both 64 and 32 bit) and on Suse 64 bit.

[I will soon find out if the bug is reproducible on the latest Mepis 64, and the latest Mandriva 64 and BSDanywhere 4.6.]

Thanks for testing against so many different distros. Can you attach an xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log and xrandr --verbose from Sabayon or one of the other cases where it did work?

This sort of sounds like broken edid from the monitor, but that data is not shown in this Xorg.0.log. Please see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/ for guidance on collecting and analyzing the edid to see if the error can be spotted.

Hi Bryce,
this might be helpful.

I am now not using Ubuntu (nor Mint or OpenSuse) for the reason that my
monitor is not being allowed to display its native resolution through the
Gforce 6150 onboard GPU. However, it is high time for me to change this
motherboard and when I do I will test Ubuntu again because I really thought
highly of this distro apart from this its (to me now too serious) bug.

Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?

If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug
report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for
you, or if it is still occurring under natty, please tag the bug 'natty'
so it's easier for us to track.
