Bug Description

Acer Aspire 9420. I installed Ubuntu 9.10. Reboot. Worked fine with several programs. Shut down. Later, normal boot. No poblems.
After a while, I did a hibernate. Since then, the computer stopped working properly after resume. Cold start does not help.
Desktop does not activate properly (background image and main menu ok, but not the shortcuts on the desktop). Programs can be opened, but not closed (the little close / minimize / maximize boxes do not appear) other than through the menu options (like "File - Quit / Close").
Sorry, cannot be more precise. Handling of windows stopped working too, cannot do alt-tab to go to other apps, and opening a terminal window almost screwed up this session, gathering the info needed for this bug report took a long time).
Like I said: switching off the notebook and a cold start did not fix the problem.

ProblemType: KernelOops
Annotation: This occured during a previous suspend and prevented it from resuming properly. The resume processing hung very near the end and will have appeared to have completed normally.

Hi all,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

Please, can you tell us whether this is still an issue for you? If not, please, consider update this bug as 'Fix Released', else, can you please, fill a little form, with questions contained in this wiki? https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume

It will definitely help developers to find the fix or help you to detect that you don't really have real bug. Please, pay special attention to the "Encrypted Home-Swap" issue and the flashing caps-lock.

Information below, will also help you

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UnderstandingSuspend

I'd also encourage you to try this tests https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/SuspendResumeTesting to gather more information to developers

Thank you in advance.

I do not know whether this still is a problem to me. Because of the problem that I reported, I lost several days of work, was unable to use my computer for almost a week, and had to do a lot of work to get back to a working system. Instead of trying to get Ubuntu 9.10 to work, I re-installed Ubuntu 9.04, re-installed my own backup. I am working with Ububntu 9.04 since then.

You can imagine that I do not want to try out anything again that is related to Ubuntu 9.10. I am certainly not goint to test the scripts that are mentioned on:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume
because that might mean that my computer will become useless again, causing me to re-install Ubuntu 9.04 again.

The problem that I reported was very real. And it was not only me that reported the problem, but thousands of other people. I do not like the insinuation that I did something wrong myself.

I do hate MS Windows (after been using that for over 20 years, inclusing MS DOS), I have looked at other versions of Linux (Debian, Red Hat) and did not like them, and my partner is trying to convince me to use an Apple as she does, but I don't like the closed source Apple systems as I don't like Windows. So I will stick to Ubuntu and I will wait for Ubuntu 10.04, but only after a couple of weeks waiting period. I don't want to ruin my computer again.

Thanks for your attention and good luck on improving Ubuntu.

Wendy,
I understand your complaint, however I cannot work on a bug further if you are unwilling to test anything new that may fix it. You say "it was not only me that reported the problem, but thousands of other people", but those other people did not mark this bug as affecting them. I hope you understand why i am marking this bug Invalid. Without a tester willing to work on it who is affected by the bug, the report is basically useless to me.

Should you decide in the future that you would like to upgrade and/or test the more current software and you encounter this bug, then please feel free to reopen this bug report.

Thanks!

Jeremy,

I am not unwilling to test per se. I am unwilling totest it now and this time. I have given up on Ubuntu 9.10 and lost enough time on it.

I am not a system manager that can spend a whole day re-installing Ubuntu 9.10, and test bug fixes, and hope that this improved version of Ubuntu 9.10 is ok for what I need.

Imagine my situation: I need this laptop for my work. I have it finetuned for my needs and that did cost me several days of work, installing the programs and add-ons and what more. To do what you want, requires me to make an extensive backup, install Ubuntu 9.10, test the bug fixes. If the bug fixes are fine, I can continue with normal work.

If the bug fixes are not fine, the only way to go back to Ubuntu 9.04 for me is to format the computer, re-install Ubuntu 9.04, install my software, add-ons and what more, finetune the settings, get the backup back in. Than I can continue with normal work.

The bug that I reported happened to me after the screwup of Ubuntu with the release of 9.10. It was even on the national Dutch news broadcast that this happened. A lot of people talked about this problem in a lot of discussion forums. I can't imagine nobody else had this problem.

Thanks for your efforts fixing the problem. Just before version 10.04 is released, Six months after the problem occurred. Sorry, I am not going into the trouble to test it.

I mean 5 months. Sorry for the exaggeration.
