Unable to stop drive

Bug Description
When trying to safely remove Maxtor Basics 500 GB USB hard drive by selecting "Safely remove drive" from it's desktop icon's right click menu an error message is shown:
Unable to stop drive
Error detaching: helper exited with
exit code 1: sence buffer empty
Error STOP UNIT for /dev/sdc: Success
Selecting "Unmount" instead gives no error messages.
Using Ubuntu 9.10
Acer ASpire 5920G laptop.

Just want to add that the same "Safely remove drive" option works just fine for Kingston 4 GB USB memory stick and Verbatim 1 GB USB memory stick and gives no errors with them.
