You're still running Jaunty's kernel (2.6.28), not Karmic's (2.6.31).
You should use the latter if you're running Karmic! You may need to
manually edit grub.cfg/menu.lst and insert the appropriate kernel
entries for Karmic.

To determine you are experiencing this issue open Sound Preferences - you can right click on the Speaker icon on your Pannel, or you can go to "System Preferences". Click on 'Hardware" and the list should be empty.

To determine the Kernel you are running type 'uname -a' and the kernel will be displayed, as shown below:

2.6.28-16-generic #55-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 20 19:48:24 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

To correct: sudo vi /boot/grub/menu.lst

Modifiy or add lines to the2.6.31 is selected. See sample below:

title Ubuntu 9.10, kernel 2.6.31-14-generic
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic
initrd /initrd.img-2.6.31-14-generic

OK, this didn't work. here is the error I get:

Begin: Waiting for root file system...
Done
Gave up waiting for device. Common problems

-Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
-check root delay (did the system wait long enough?)
-check root (did the system wait for the right device?)
-Missing modules (cat /proc modules; ls/desc

Alert does not exist dropping to shell.

When I installed 9.10 I chose the option to keep the existing menu.lst.
Apparently that was a mistake. It would seem to me that the menu.lst should
be updated without losing entries for other OS's.

I'm afraid I will have to either downgrade or re-install? The new kernel
does not seem to recognize the file system....

If you've successfully upgraded to Karmic you should be running kernel version 2.6.31-14-generic which you can verify by typing "uname -r" (without the quotes) in a terminal. If it reports something other than 2.6.31 then you are not booting a Karmic kernel.

To fix the issue:

In a terminal run:
  sudo mv /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/menu.lst.backup
  sudo update-grub
  sudo reboot

After rebooting, in a terminal run:
  uname -a

Verify that the kernel you are now booting is of the
2.6.31 variety. It should look something like: "Linux bradf-home 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:05:01 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux"

If, after booting with a Karmic kernel you are still
having audio issues, change this bug back to new and
run:
  apport-collect -p alsa-base 466775

Changed in alsa-driver (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete

Steven,

The menu.lst in Ubuntu includes defined sections where you can safely include boot entries for other OSes without introducing problems on upgrades. If you instead put these boot entries in the block managed automatically by update-grub, this will invariably cause problems on upgrade. See <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KarmicKoala/ReleaseNotes#GRUB%20menu.lst:%20install%20the%20maintainer%27s%20version%20vs.%20keep%20the%20local%20version> for more information about this problem.

As for the current boot failure - did you modify your menu.lst using the instructions George gave in <https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/466775/comments/4>? Those boot stanzas are incomplete and should not be used; but you should be able to recover by choosing the older kernel again from the boot menu, and fixing the config fully using the release notes instructions I've linked above.
