Thank you for reporting this bug and helping to make ubuntu better in the future. It sounds like you have a typical GPU freeze. Take a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze for more information about this and how to get a batchbuffer dump which we will need to take this any further.

Btw, there is a similar bug report for the same chipset at bug 456902. However, for bugs like this it is really hard to say if the bugs are different or not, so we prefer to treat them separately until it's proved that they are the same. So please don't mark this bug report as a duplicate of that one at this point.

I have looked at bug 456902. There is no need to turn off Desktop Effects since this PCI ID [8086:2562] is blacklisted in COMPIZ. I have also tried 'nomodeset' while booting and the freeze still takes place.

I move from place to place and use whatever machines available at that place. This bug report pertains to my daughter's desktop located at Bhubaneswar, India and I am leaving this place tomorrow. Luckily I was using the Karmic installation on it today and the freeze has taken place when another Laptop was available at home. I am using that Laptop with Ubuntu Jaunty Live CD now and could ssh into the desktop.

I am attaching dri_debug-20091103.tgz here.

Btw I am leaving this Karmic installation with vesa driver in xorg.conf to make it usable.

First after upgrade to 9.10 the screen sometimes froze with the mouse pointer still moving. Sometimes there where dense white and black horizontal lines across the entire screen hiding everything.

Finally after a few reboots from remote session "putty" login from another computer the screen activity stoped at "init crypto disks [OK]"

Issuing "lspci -nn | grep VGA" reveals the following about my hardware:
=============

Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/
GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device [8086:2562] (rev 01)
=============

Followed the instructions at "https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReinhardTartler/X/RevertingIntelDriverTo2.4" to revert to an earlier driver and rebooted again.

Now the 9.10 desktop works again!!!

I also had this problem on my new Dell Vostro 1520. Reverting back to the earlier Intel driver seems to have fixed the X locking issue for me.

I returned to Bhubaneswar and updated the kernel to 2.6.31.15.28 and tried intel driver and the system was freezing as before. Today I updated the kernel to 2.6.31.16.29 and again switched to intel driver and there is no freeze today so far. I will report if the system freezes once again.

This bug and Bug #456902 seem very similar. I can't suggest any fixes because I'm a newbie, but my problem is similar to both of these bugs. One difference, however, is that alt-sysrq-reisub (if that's right) doesn't work for me. No keyboard or click inputs work. I always have to power down. When I restart, I usually need to do so three times before I get the display to show again.

Yeah, same here, none of my buttons work. I have to remote in to
reboot the box. I uploaded the intel debug output, but am working out
of my laptop for now until they fix the issue with the i915 driver.
Switching distributions doesn't work either. I am two seconds from
getting a cheapo pci video card just so I can get my work done. I have
been using Linux since 98, and this has been the biggest fail from
what I've experienced.

Hi, I too am experiencing random freezes on my Dell Dimension 2400 with Intel 82845G/GL/GE Chipset. Once it freezes I can no longer move the mouse or type on the keyboard. CapsLock and NumLock both stop working. I can however SSH into the box fine. I don't see any erros in any of the logs - nothing unusual for my inexperienced eyes.

As far as I can remember this only started once I upgraded to the 9.04 and 9.10.

lspci -vv produces this:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01)
        Subsystem: Dell Device 0160

        Region 1: Memory at feb80000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512K]
        Capabilities: <access denied>
        Kernel driver in use: i915
        Kernel modules: i915

I see some people on the net say that the Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device should use the i810 driver - Is this true????

I also see that some people have had results with Reverting the Jaunty Xorg intel driver to 2.4
Can you or anyone confirm this??

bugbot (bugbot) wrote :

This bug appears to involve a freeze of Xorg, probably due to a GPU
lockup in the kernel drm code, in a version of Ubuntu before
natty (or we couldn't determine the version from the report).

The X team has been investigating GPU lockups in Intel's video driver
during the natty development cycle. Many of these issues are now either
resolved or at least well understood. There are also better tools for
capturing and diagnosing these problems, but these tools are either
unavailable or incomplete in older versions of ubuntu, so debugging this
issue on pre-natty versions is unlikely to be productive. We're closing
out the bug report for this reason.

However, you may not yet be ready to upgrade to natty. It turned out
that a large number of these freezes were solved by updates to the
kernel. Thus, updating your kernel may be a workaround for you.
Updated kernel packages are available a variety of places, such as:

  http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

If you find a newer kernel fixes it, and think the fix should be
backported to earlier Ubuntu versions, please file a request against the
linux kernel in Ubuntu, indicating the broken and the fixed kernel
versions.

If it does not fix it, and you do not wish to upgrade to natty, please
follow up through technical support channels (e.g. http://askubuntu.com
is a good place for free support for older Ubuntu versions).

On the other hand, if you find after upgrading to natty and updating to
latest that you still experience GPU lockups, please reproduce the
problem, ssh into the frozen machine, and collect the file
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state and the output of 'dmesg >
dmesg.txt', and attach both to a new bug report.
