Sound too loud

Bug Description

The sound is uncomfortably loud even at 20% volume. In previous versions of Ubuntu, a workaround was to decrease PCM volume to around 30-40%, but I can't find anything to adjust it in the new volume control dialog, nor does adjusting it in 'alsamixer' seem to work.

Hi kunami,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid.

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 465384

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hmm, apport could have let me write a message and zipped all those files...

Anyway, I just upgraded to Lucid and the issue remains.

Actually, it's worse, now. The ignore_dB=1 workaround does not work.

Lowering the PCM volume to around 50% in alsamixer does, however.

A patch for this issue is included upstream in kernel 2.6.32.13. From the changelog:

commit ce6f0822025b8e13c7058b954eba4d40cb2a93b5
Author: Daniel T Chen
Date: Wed Apr 28 18:00:11 2010 -0400

ALSA: hda: Fix 0 dB for Packard Bell models using Conexant CX20549 (Venice)

    commit 8f0f5ff6777104084b4b2e1ae079541c2a6ed6d9 upstream.

    BugLink: https://launchpad.net/bugs/541802

The OR's hardware distorts at PCM 100% because it does not correspond to
0 dB. Fix this in patch_cxt5045() for all Packard Bell models.

This kernel or kernel 2.6.32.14 will be used as the basis for a new Lucid kernel which should appear in -proposed soon, now that the recent round of security updates have migrated from -proposed to -updates.
