Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in linux.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 464199

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report. Thanks in advance!

I can confirm this bug - I have the same problem on a new Dell Latitude 6400 Notebook with an Intel 5100 WLAN adapter.
Several other people appear to have this problem as well (see threads:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1307396 or
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1305616 or
http://swiss.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1305190 (the proposed solution turning ACPI off, didn't work for me))

I have been running the Karmic beta version on this netbook. Interestingly, WLAN didn't work in the beginning, after some updates it did - for a few days - and then it ceased to work maybe 2-3 days prior to the release candidate (I thought about posting a bug report - I really should have in retrospect... sorry)

The relevant section of "lshw -c network" looks pretty similar

  *-network DISABLED
       description: Wireless interface

       vendor: Intel Corporation
       physical id: 0

       configuration: broadcast=yes driver=iwlagn latency=0 multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11abgn
       resources: irq:22 memory:f1ffe000-f1ffffff

Hope this helps.

OK... I found this in my syslog:

Oct 31 19:45:08 protoomega NetworkManager: <info> Found radio killswitch rfkill2 (at /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1c.1/0000:0c:00.0/ieee80211/phy0/rfkill2) (driver <unknown>)
Oct 31 19:45:08 protoomega NetworkManager: <info> Found radio killswitch rfkill0 (at /sys/devices/virtual/rfkill/rfkill0) (driver <unknown>)
Oct 31 19:45:08 protoomega NetworkManager: <info> Wireless now disabled by radio killswitch

As these messages indicate, the notebook has a slightly hidden switch (at the side) to enable and disable WLAN - and it works perfectly with Ubuntu... (this is so very, very embarassing indeed ... ) So no problem here. Hopefully, some of the posted links will help nevertheless.

Hi magicskyer,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

My Intel PRO/Wireless 5100 AGN worked fine under ubuntu 10.0 (after some initial flakiness), but hasn't worked since I upgraded to 10.04 last night. My system is an HP dv7-2270us Intel Core-2 Quad. It has the Radio HW On/Off touch switch, but the wireless isn't recognized whether the switch is on (blue) or off (red).

The following is the output from sudo lshw -C Network. Any help would be much appreciated.

I was able to solve this problem by loading wicd from the package manager. The 10.04 Network Manager still cannot access the wireless card correctly and I've had to disable it.
