Bug Description

U9.10, i386. Sound card is in PCI slot, it is ForteMedia 801. There is sound card on the motherboard too but I don't use it.
00:0a.0 Multimedia audio controller: Fortemedia, Inc Xwave QS3000A [FM801] (rev b2)

Second. Sound preferences in Volume control has dialogue like this (INPUT):

Choose device for sound input:
o Internal Audio Analog Stereo
o Internal Audio Analog Stereo

Is this dialogue about two different devices with the same name? Is the same device listed twice? Very confusing...

BTW, audio was working in Ubuntu 8.04.3 on the same PC fine; at least much better compared with U9.10. I observed similar issues in FC11 before.

CheckboxData: Sound is terrible. 8.04 sounds wery well but 9.10 is serius stepback. I hear siome sounds but with gaps; maybe that buffers are played in wrong order or some timer problem. Not only here all sounds. Something was recorded, thsiis good point.
CheckboxDescription:
Open the volume control application by right-clicking on the speaker icon in the panel and selecting "Sound Preferences". Select the "Input" tab and choose any alternate (non-default) device(s). Select the "Output" tab and choose any alternate (non-default) device(s). When you are done, click the Test button, then speak into the microphone. After a few seconds, your speech will be played back to you.

Did you hear your speech played back?

Hi psl,

Please, if you are still having issues, test with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p alsa-base 463674

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds .

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

Please let us know your results.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

The last report from apport-collect is still from U9.10 i386, updated with the latest version of packages. Audio is still broken.
I am going to test the same with Ubuntu 10.04 beta...

Retested in U10.04 i386 beta. My sound card still cannot play nice songs. I hear sound but it is not good, like buffers are played in random order or some buffers are lost.

In the case you will give me some reference sound file, I can play it and record my audio output for your analyze in Audacity or similar tool. I think good test file could be:
1) sine wave of well define frequency - to test continuity and timing/frequency
2) sine wave of increasing frequency - to see if buffers are lost or order of buffer is changed

Don't you miss a suite to test audio in Ubuntu?? Something more serious than checkbox that just play sound check with user if HW is OK.

I confirm the same problem with the same card, in Ubuntu 10.04 beta 1 amd64. Audio playback corrupted, FM tuner does not work too. Following settings worked in Ubuntu 8.04:

options snd-fm801 tea575x_tuner=2
