Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-restricted-extras

The recommends for ubuntu-restricted-extras include the 'stripped' versions of the ffmpeg libs.

"libavcodec52, libavformat52, libpostproc51, libswscale0"

If the 'extra' versions of these files are installed prior to installing the restricted-extras' package then they are removed, along with anything depending on them ( devede is an ex.

While there is nothing preventing one from re-installing the 'extra' libs this is confusing to many users and is quite the opposite of what they expected to achieve.

Well, if this isn't going to be changed in karmic then how about not having it happen in lucid where the package is currently the same.

Or an explanation as to why it shouldn't or doesn't matter

Already done in Karmic (http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/multiverse/u/ubuntu-restricted-extras/ubuntu-restricted-extras_36/changelog ):

ubuntu-restricted-extras (36) karmic; urgency=low

  * Replace all references to ffmpeg unstripped libs to standard ones, as
the unstripped ones have been dropped/renamed from the ffmpeg package.
  * Those changes were discussed with Reinhard Tartler, who packages ffmpeg.

Whatever.... affects me not in the least, though this is confusing users ans causing some issue

Dropping the unstripped is fine, they don't exist in karmic except as 'transitional'.

Why aren't the recommends for the "extra" versions, (formerly known as "unstripped")

Jonathan,

You're explanation of a fix is exactly the undesired behavior that Doug has reported as a bug. We are simply asking that ubuntu-restricted-extras change the following current recommends from:

libavcodec52
libavformat52
libpostproc51
libswscale0

to:

libavcodec-extra-52
libavformat-extra-52
libpostproc-extra-51
libswscale-extra-0

I believe the recommendation of the "extra" packages to be the expected behavior--similar to Jaunty.

This bug was fixed in the package ubuntu-restricted-extras - 38

---------------
ubuntu-restricted-extras (38) lucid; urgency=low

  * Depend on libavcodec-extra-52. There must have been some
miscommunication between Anthony and me. (LP: #462366)
  * Drop other binary packages than libavcodec-extra-52 that are produced
by the 'ffmpeg' package. They are being installed implicitly via
    dependencies.
