I tried Karmic daily build AlternateCD 27th of Oct. and those two issues has been fixed, it loaded faster like legacy grub and it detected all my installtion

May be those issues happened because I installed it on top of legacy grub of hardy (without uninstalling legacy grub first)

Changed in grub2 (Ubuntu):
status: New → Fix Released

I have done a ubuntu 9.10 clean install on 30th october. it takes much time to load the grub (grub 1.97 beta 4) menu. Can you tell what type of Fix has been released? Is there any way to delete this new grub and install the old good one?

Some additional info. The grub detected windows xp correctly. Windows is installed in /dev/sda1 and ubuntu in /dev/sdb1. Before loading grub menu, the hard disk is under full work for about half a minute or more. (A machine like sound can also be heard). Such a thing I have not encountered from dapper to jaunty.

Anish_D here is the full details of my scenario:
I have two hard drives, /dev/sda (has Windows and Hardy) and /dev/sdb (empty), I did a fresh install of a daily build of Karmic (27th of Oct.). During setup I have been prompted to install GRUB and I hit OK, apparently it has installed GRUB2 on /dev/sda (on top of legacy grub of Hardy) then the described above issue came up. I don't know is this issue because of a bug in GRUB2 or because it has been installed on top of legacy grub.

Later on, I did a fresh install of the final release of Karmic, but this time I choosed to install grub on /dev/sdb -in this case it is (hd1)- the issue didn't appear, GRUB menu loaded just fine. that's why I marked the question as fix-released

Here is how I recovered from the first situation:
- restore Windows XP mbr using MBRFIX utility (freeware) http://www.sysint.no/products/Download/tabid/536/language/nb-NO/Default.aspx
- Install legacy grub using LiveCD of Hardy (or later but not Karmic) but mounting Hardy's partition (/media/hardy) and then in terminal - In terminal do "sudo grub-install (hd0) --root-directory=/media/hardy"
- reboot , now I got back my old grub list

Please refer to grub wiki page for more info http://wiki.ubuntu.com/grub, and let me know if you had more problems

Hmmm... that sounds like "put it back the old way" rather than "the new way is fixed".

I too am experiencing a long wait as grub loads initially which is a shame since it undoes all the great work the team has invested in faster boot times.

It's certainly not around the 45 seconds you describe here, mine is closer to 10 I think.

I have 2 hard disks, one with Vista, Windows 7 and Ubuntu 09.10 installed, the other with Windows 7 RC.

Is "put it back the old way" really my only option? Any help much appreciated.

The_wingle Did you install GRUB2 on top of legacy grub?? if yes, please try reinstalling GRUB2.

I have reloaded Grub2 twice and still have a 15 to 25 second Grub Loading. message before the menu. I have tried the default and also a splash screen which both take the same time. Grub2 takes longer than Ubuntu to load. This system has two hard disks and three operating systems.

Is there a way to speed this up. I have tried disabling looking for operating systems and that does not help.

If it is not possible to speed up loading then is there a way to get rid of the Grub Loading message?

What is the use of taking the time and energy to make Ubuntu fast loading and then crippling it with a dead slow boot loader?
