Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

I'm using ubuntu 9.04 i386 version, locale info as following:

~$ locale
LANG=zh_CN.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="zh_CN.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="zh_CN.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="zh_CN.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="zh_CN.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="zh_CN.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="zh_CN.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="zh_CN.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="zh_CN.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="zh_CN.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="zh_CN.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="zh_CN.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="zh_CN.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=

When using totem to play music with a Chinese title/artist name, characters may become irrecognizable. But this doesn't always take place. I guess a UTF-8 encoding name is ok, but a GBK encoding name will fail.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/totem-gstreamer
NonfreeKernelModules: fglrx
Package: totem-gstreamer 2.26.1-0ubuntu5
ProcEnviron:
 PATH=(custom, user)
 LANG=zh_CN.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: totem
Uname: Linux 2.6.28-15-generic i686

And if I may expect, let the system/application gain the full ability to
determine what code is used for a file's property may cost quite a lot of
effort. However, there may be another way to solve the problem. Right now,
the Nautilus don't have the function to change the content of a property of
a music file. I wish it will be available in a future version.

Thanks.
