Unfortunately, fixing this bug is going to require some effort. I've just filed http://bugs.debian.org/552429 so we can decide on the best course of action.

In the meantime, you can run:
update-alternatives --remove-all mpirun
update-alternatives --remove-all mpiexec
That will make the alternatives system forget about LAM.

Changed in mpich2 (Ubuntu):
status: New → Confirmed

Thanks for the suggestions.

OK, I finally prepared an SRU to fix all the mpich2 issues, including this one. Patch attached.

Changelog:
 mpich2 (1.2-1ubuntu1.1) karmic-proposed; urgency=low
 .
   * The package uploaded just before the karmic release was done in a
hurry. This update fixes several issues that were missed at the time.
+ Suggest mpich2-doc instead of Recommending it. Makes it easier to
       co-install with other MPI implementations.
+ Conflict with mpd (Debian bug #551932).
+ Fix alternatives mess introduced by openmpi and copied into mpich2.
       (Debian bug #552429). LP: #460728
+ Binaries names are hardcoded in some places. We remove the .py
suffix for all of them, but did not fix all the occurences of the
       binaries names. LP: #488109

Accepted mpich2 into karmic-proposed, the package will build now and be available in a few hours. Please test and give feedback here. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Thank you in advance!
