nvidia-graphics-drivers-96
nvidia-graphics-drivers-96-dev

ended up both installed after upgrade. Possibly because I ran:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

before the

update-notifier-kde -d

and before a reboot.

sudo apt-get remove nvidia-glx-96-dev

seems to have given me a booting system.
