Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

I installed Xubuntu 9.10 beta from the Xubuntu beta installation disc.

In the beginning everything was working fine. But after some time (maybe after changing resolution via "Settings -> Display") I have difficulties logging into X. This takes between 1 or 5 login tries.

Along with that problem I lost the xfce-panel, which I worked around with adding it add manually to "Session and Autostart".

My system is quite "default" and uptodate, with some packages from medibuntu.

In my home directory there's a .xsession-errors.old with these contents:

/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
Setting IM through im-switch for locale=en_US.
Start IM through /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all_ALL linked to /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/default.

You're right, there's a backtrace at the end of the Xorg.0.log.old. (attached)

The procedure when the xserver is failing is that (after entering the password):
1. the xubuntu "glowfly" screen
2. blanking
3. the glowfly screen
4. white screen
5. login screen again

on success it's:
1. glowfly screen
2. blanking
3. changed resolution glowfly screen
4. white screen
5. xfce desktop

I'm having a similar issue after upgrading to Xubuntu 9.10. My monitor is a Dell that permits multiple inputs. In this particular case the machine is off one of the DVI inputs. I had to switch from one input to another and when switching back I had no screen.

I've attached my Xorg.O.log file. Please let me know if you need anything else. This is the first time this has happened.

From the .xsession-errors file created:

Hmm, I've never had any issues with logging in. All my problems seem to stem from not using the machine for long periods of time ( >24 hours).

I came in this morning to find the machines display to be non responsive, I was able to SSH in an attempted to restart gdm (didn't work), my .xsession-errors file came back with:

/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
Setting IM through im-switch for locale=en_US.
Start IM through /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all_ALL linked to /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/default.

I have the same problem as the original submitter. I am running Mythbuntu 9.10 (with xfce4) and have gdm setup to login automatically. Unfortunately, the login fails with the "Fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server" messages in .xsession-errors. I experienced the same problem:

Fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server

intermittently on Ubuntu 9.10 32-bit running as a guest machine on VMware 7.0.1, w/tools 8.1.4 build-227600. Adding:

Section "Device"
        Option "HWcursor" "false"
        Option "SWcursor" "true"
        Driver "vmware"
        . . .
EndSection
,
to /etc/X11/xorg.conf corrected the problem. I generated the base xorg.conf with Xorg -configure.

The problem, in this case anyway, isn't specific to Nvidia cards.

Same problem. Xorg SEGV upon xfce login from GDM after upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10.

Setting SWcursor to true as indicated in earlier posts prevents the crash. Xorg.log and backtrace attached.

Hi Goatsly,

This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you
test if it still occurs on Lucid?

Please note we also provide technical support for older versions of
Ubuntu, but not in the bug tracker. Instead, to raise the issue through
normal support channels, please see:

    http://www.ubuntu.com/support

If you are the original reporter and can still reproduce the issue on
Lucid, please run the following command to refresh the report:

  apport-collect 460478

If you are not the original reporter, please file a new bug report, so
we can work with you as the original reporter instead (you can reference
bug 460478 in your report if you think it may be related):

  ubuntu-bug xorg

If by chance you can no longer reproduce the issue on Lucid or if you
feel it is no longer relevant, please mark the bug report 'Fix Released'
or 'Invalid' as appropriate, at the following URL:

I tested this bug on Lucid again:

I changed /etc/X11/xorg.conf entries back to

        Option "SWcursor" "false" # [<bool>]
        Option "HWcursor" "true" # [<bool>]

again. The bug doesn't occur anymore. Login worked always at the first attempt since then.

--> Fix released.
