Bug Description

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

hi,
i just reinstalled my cd live ubuntu 9.04 back to my new laptop.. downloaded all package software from repo, up-date all through up date manager.. but still no sound../// rhythmbox version 0.12.0-0 ubuntu4...installed on i386 architecture/ hp compaq 510 product mdl no. VF584PA3#UU,,,

rhythmbox only display list of songs but never play,,,
no other action after displaying list of songs

 1.14.0 ubuntu desktop system
i was expecting it will run like windows7 media player after installation but never happened.. but not i'm not all so surprised because i was warned by hp office that this laptop is design for window7 os and no sound driver available for linux i do not know which is true now. but as i look through the specification they sent to my e-mail, i noticed this model of laptop come equipped with LINUX RED FLAG but only sold for china population.
i think sound driver will be available then,, i just don't know where to get...
anyway ,, there must still be some finishing touches to make for linux ubuntu to work perfectly on other laptop models..
for now i will still use this while waiting for the sound.. webcam work with ekiga.net but no connection.. send you bug report soon..

thank you for any help you may extend

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

 * Is this reproducible?
 * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
 * Do you get sound in other applications there?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

Can you try to play the files inside "/usr/share/example-content" to see if sound works?

hi sir,
thanks for taking time to read my question.. but after i posted the question i received a copy of ubuntu 9.10 kk from canonical and then installed it to replace 9.04.. the sound works and all other function of my laptop except the
cd-lightscriber function (cd face design-etching).. i.e. as i can see now, of course maybe if there are bugs on software installed.. so far the problem i have with rythmbox is "text|html decoder" which is needed to play some internet radio station.. i can't find it in synaptic pkg mgr..For cd play rythmbox is good but no options/menu to adjust sound quality like "equalizer" or bass booster or whatever.. it is just plain sound..anyway it is good player and no skipping even on old /scratch disc being played..
i installed audacious for radio streaming.. i am not sure if this is the right place to send my question but here it is..... I noticed just lately one problem .. audacious will just stops playing and always need to restart again and again.. when i play cd on audacious it will load automatically and the speed of play is so fast ..keynotes is high,,, so it sounds like alvin voice.. "alvin the chipmunks"...also when i use audacious-default theme as my theme and it looks good.. it is a bad combination with pidgin..
when i start to chat or when the other person send chat messages to me.. all i can see is black.. audacious theme is black.. dialog/chat box is black too so i can not see what other person saying/typing or rather the message.. no options to clororizes incoming messages.. i do not know other plugins for audacious.. i installed them all already..
anything i missed ?
thanks..

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You report that rhythmbox works fine now and since sound was not at all working, it was not a rhythmbox bug. Since everything works fine now, I am closing this bug report. Please keep your questions to Launchpad's answer tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/ or use the ubuntu forums at http://ubuntuforums.org/

hi,
yes sounds work now for i use karmic koala.. if i will reinstall jaunty.. the sound will disappear again.. i guess the problem is with jaunty..
if i install avant manager now on karmic koala.. it kills rythmbox.(stock on my screen-no reaction) i experienced it and i reported it already..
2 things i have not tested , the lightscriber function and sd card of this HP..i always forget.. and i do not see any software for it from synptic pkg mgr.. If i reinstall the original OS which is windows 7.. lightscribe works and sd/mmm card slot..of course with additional software given to me by laptop dealer..
linux for this laptop is good.. except for some packages i installed which sometimes kills other packages..

ok thanks a lot !
