Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I have a notebook with intel 945 graphic adapter, internal 1024*768 screen and an external 1280*1024 LCD.
Compiz runs well in clone mode, also xinerama works when compiz is disabled.
The problem occurs with every user (also with a newly created one).

When compiz is running and I try to change from clone- to xinerama-mode using gnome-display-properities, the screen becomes black, only the mice is visible and working. When I kill X with Alt-Print-K, on my notebook screen gdm appears, but on the external screen there are only grey vertical stripes and the cloned mice. This behavior is visible after login, too. However, after I logged out again, it works fine.

If I disable desktop-effects and enabled xinerama afterwards, xinerama works. If I try to enable desktop-effects again, I receive a message box containing "Die Desktop-Effekte konnten nicht aktiviert werden.".

The problem is reproducible, so feel free to ask further questions.

Hi henneyng,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I tried to activate xinerama while compiz is active again with alpha 3 of Ubuntu 10.4.

When I deactivate clone mode in gnome-display-properities the screen become black. However, the pointer of the mice is visible and I can move the pointer on both screen (so xinerama seems to work). On the left side there is also a small vertical line (maybe one pixel in width) and it seems that there are windows hiding. When I try to move them with Alt+Mouse, the colors of the line changes; it seems that all windows are working. After a few time, gnome-display-properities resets to clone mode.

The xorg log is attached.

I've made a screenshot, too, where you see the described line. Hope this helps.

Kind regards,
