Bug Description

Similar to #424257, I am unable to boot the amd64 version of Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala live cd. The 32 bit works fine.

I expect at least some console output after removing both quiet and splash from the boot line, however I receive none.

The computer will boot to the grub just fine, and I am able to select my language, and how I want the CD to be booted. Either 'install' or 'run without installing' give the same error. The error being a blank background with a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner of the screen. I have let it sit there for an hour once and it did not move past.

Hi kspitz,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you're using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

I can't boot the amd64 live cd at all, so I can't paste any of that. Do you want me to paste what you requested from the working 9.04 environment?

Here is the lscpi -vvnn from 9.10 RC 32 bit LIVE CD. As I cannot boot the amd64 at all, I figured this is as close as I can get it.

I will post the dmesg shortly.

And here is Xorg.0.log. I do not use a custom version of it.

Please remember that I cannot boot amd64 LIVE CD or ALTERNATE CD at all. This is all output from the 32 bit version.

Me too!

This is a serious issue for me!

Dell Optiplex 740 N series,ATI radeon 2400. Jaunty amd64 boots fine. Can upgrade from Jaunty to Karmic. Tried without splash & quiet, and safe graphics mode. The machine is borked only hard boot works. i386 desktop iso works like a charm. Even the dual head monitors can be configured.

KyleSLinux, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a terminal, as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

If reproducible, could you also please test the latest upstream kernel available (the one all the way at the top, and not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.15-rc8

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
