Rhythmbox has long pause between playing tunes

Bug Description
Binary package hint: rhythmbox
When playing music often there is a long (several minutes) pause between each number. Pressing next starts the next number. Rhythmbox indicates that it is playing (the green play arrow is 'pressed in'), but there is no sound and no movement of the process indicator.
The problem has been present since my upgrade to Karmic.
