Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

When i log in, i have no window borders. This seems to be due to compiz being off: when i go to System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual effects, "No effects" is checked. I check it and everything works fine. However, on the next login, i have the same situation.

I read https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/432871, but re-installing compiz didn't help.

I examined .compiz and .config/compiz as well as config files in other locations and could not see any differences between the bugged box and a working box.

The following commands fixed the problem:

sudo apt-get remove --purge compiz compizconfig-backend-gconf compiz-core compiz-fusion-plugins-extra compiz-fusion-plugins-main compiz-gnome compiz-plugins compiz-wrapper libcompizconfig0

rm -rf ~/.config/compiz

rm -rf ~/.compiz

sudo apt-get remove --purge compiz compizconfig-backend-gconf compiz-core compiz-fusion-plugins-extra compiz-fusion-plugins-main compiz-gnome compiz-plugins compiz-wrapper libcompizconfig0

Evidently this is some sort of failed update. If others confirm the bug should be closed.

Just tried it, and it doesn't help. One thing is different: On login, i no longer see the spinner, but a regular mouse pointer.

I withdraw that, the spinner is still there on reboot, it had only disappeared when i logged out and in again.

When i enable desktop effects for the first time after a reboot, it says it's looking for installable drivers for some time, is that any help?

Try reselecting the driver via jockey. If you have the same problem
you should be fine after a reboot.

Alas, i ran jockey (jockey-gtk), but no change. I still get the spinner, and no window borders. (Actually, the message i get when enabling desktop effects for the first time is this: "Searching for available drivers".) The jockey's output was: no proprietary drivers were found on the system.

Hi Lucious,
If you can't enable desktop effects then that's another bug. This bug is about having to enable desktop effects each time on startup after first login in order to get window borders.

In my case it had something to do with .local folder in my home. After renaming that folder everything works again. I haven't had time to figure out what exactly in that folder is causing that, but I hope it gives you a glue.

i'm sort of affected. After login I sometimes do not have borders. Most of the time it works OK but I'd say about 1 out of 6 times it fails and I need to log out/log in to get my borders back with compiz.

In October last year, i got a new harddisk and migrated my files to this, omitting most of the "hidden" folders. This solved the problem for me. Probably there was something in the configuration files that caused this error. Taavi Palo's hint to (re)move the .local folder may be worth investigating for people who still have this issue.

For now, i guess this bug can be closed: it only happened on upgrade to Karmic, and we have moved on to Lucid now.
