CTRL/ALT/BKSPACE doesn't restart SoaS (system crash)

Bug Description

CTRL/ALT/BKSPACE doesn't restart SoaS, as it does the XO-1. The system freezes instead. Since with 0.86 the restart option no longer appears in the user drop-down menu, developers lack a restart option.

Such an option is particularly useful on SoaS when a quick boot into an alternate OS (such as Windows) is desired.

(Alternately, this "keyboard shortcut" should be completely disabled, as currently it only results in a crash.)

Try using control panel: I move slider for frame slightly and get a fast
restart

CTRL+ALT+BKSP would only restart the graphical X11 environment, not the entire system. This is useful for reinstalling activities, but wouldn't help when booting into Windows.

Luke is right, it would only restart the X server. However, from what I know, this feature has been disabled upstream (I'm not aware of the exact reason, though), which is why Fedora has incorporated this change, too. So is the keyboard shortcut now really causing a crash or just not changing anything? I agree, if there's a crash, we need to work out what's wrong.

Sebastian,

The keyboard shortcut is really causing a crash.

The screen goes blank like it is trying to shut down and either:
1) remains blank indefinitely;
2) as above, except that the following is displayed:
Registered protocol family 10
Disabled Privacy Extensions
nouveau 0000:00:0d.0: nouveau_fifo_free: freeing fifo 0

followed by a single blinking dot, which when you press SPACE or ENTER, adds
successive dots (the last blinking).

HTH,

Art Hunkins

Luke is right, it would only restart the X server. However, from what I
know, this feature has been disabled upstream (I'm not aware of the
exact reason, though), which is why Fedora has incorporated this change,
too. So is the keyboard shortcut now really causing a crash or just not
changing anything? I agree, if there's a crash, we need to work out

On XO-1 with soas04xo build, ctrl-alt-erase is ignored. I have to resort to the bypass described in comment "#1" to restart X (i.e., to restart Sugar).

I heard a rumour that the absence of Ctrl-Alt-Backspace-restarts-X is
a F12 feature.

Yeah, I noticed it was an upstream decision that was included in F11. So I don't think we should really diverge from it here. Here are some more information: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_11_Alpha_release_notes#X_Server

Well, this leaves us without a Restart option.

So again I propose that the Restart option be reclaimed as part of the user
dropdown menu.

As I mentioned, I use this feature *constantly* (with SoaS Strawberry), to
easily boot in and out of Windows. Otherwise, I'd have to completely shut
down.
