Bug Description

Binary package hint: xfce4

Description: Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release: 9.10

Computer: Acer Aspire 5102 WLMi

Problem description: Occasionally keyboard (and sometimes mouse) locks up. This happens for example when switching to a virtual console from the graphical interface. Usually even ctrl-alt-sysreq (plus r-s-u-b) doesn't work, requiring power switch -reboot. The same lock-up may occur while the machine is idle.

Unfortunately I don't have much of means to figure out, what component causes this - my best guess is the window manager.

Description: Ubuntu Karmic

Problem Description: Random mouse locks up after several minutes....even hours of use. I am new to Linux and just recently started to learn the language so I cant be of much help. Still yet I am trying to find ways to repair/fix this problem on my computer. This problem occurs no matter what I am doing, whether it be on the internet or using any other applications. With this in mind I still find Linux to be a breath of fresh air as an O/S. Anyone have any ideas on how to tweak or fix this problem???

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it without more information.

Please run the following command in a terminal which will attach necessary information:

apport-collect 450499

Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository with 'sudo apt-get install python-launchpadlib'. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report.

Thanks for the additional information. I am marking this confirmed, it is present in both Xubuntu 9.10 and Lucid. I have experienced keyboard lockups in lucid, but only in the terminal and thunar. Opening a new session of the locked application allows me to continue. Since my mouse does not freeze, I simply close the frozen keyboard application. Unfortunately, at those times, gdb also freezes and I have been unable to obtain a backtrace.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help with this. I recently(tonight) formatted my hard drive and re-installed Lucid from a live cd and still have the same problem. Mouse and keyboard lockup with no way to fix except hard reboot. After wireless mouse locks up I can plug a USB mouse in and get some time with it until it locks up as well...then its time to reboot.
Thanks

Thanks for the additional information. I am marking this confirmed, it
is present in both Xubuntu 9.10 and Lucid. I have experienced keyboard
lockups in lucid, but only in the terminal and thunar. Opening a new
session of the locked application allows me to continue. Since my mouse
does not freeze, I simply close the frozen keyboard application.
Unfortunately, at those times, gdb also freezes and I have been unable
to obtain a backtrace.

I would suspect this is much more likely a kernel or Xorg bug than one in XFCE.

Hi!

Due to some other (bigger) issues I switched back to Ubuntu (ca. a month
ago). Since then, no problems.
