Bug Description

Binary package hint: pm-utils

On the MSI Wind U100, if brightness is adjusted with either the brightness function keys or Ubuntu itself it gets itself stuck in a continuous loop whereby the brightness applet(? - the pop up window) stays continuously on the screen, and the brightness level toggles between the current setting and the next brightness setting up (e.g. say 10% and 20% or 50% and 60% etc).
This also results in the brightness of the screen actually continuously changing as well, making it very difficult to use.

This also occurs at startup, so from boot time onwards the brightness of the backlight for the screen is flashing constantly.
A work around at the moment, is to set the brightness level in the System-Preferences-Power Management to the lowest level.
This stops the screen from flashing continuously (unless you try and adjust the screen brightness).
Thankfully the lowest level on the Wind is quite usable in most lighting conditions.

My U100 is changing brightness (blinking), until I click the "start" button.

i'm also affected with this bug. i've found that, if the brightness-blinking starts, i can go to a terminal and do a "killall gnome-power-manager" to stop the blinking. @TomBoj, where's that "start" button?

Please excuse us ex-windows button.
The "Start" button would be the "Main Menu" button (Ubuntu logo) on the 'task bar' panel, that brings up the main menu.

binarypill: I think the Main Menu (ubuntu logo) button. I hope shortly repair this bug.

This also affects me on the final stable release of Xubuntu 9.10, MSI Wind u100. The brightness goes insane, flipping from brighter to darker to brighter, in an endless loop. This is a pretty severe bug.

Even my U100 has the same problem. The only solution is to make a few clicks on the main menu.

I figured out a solution that works indefinitely, at least till an
update comes along anyway. Go to applications>settings>Xfce 4 Settings
Manager>Power Management and all settings for monitor and brightness to
never. So far this has worked, as long as I don't try to adjust the
brightness because that would trigger our little problem again which I don't
wanna do. So until there is a fix this works fine, actually I'll keep my
settings this way just in case. Hope this helps.
