Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

Some may object to the username being automatically entered/displayed at login in Karmic.
Without getting into possible "security issues", this is not how it was done previously and I think that if this will be the default and final way this appears, then there should be an option to "toggle" this in "Administration > Login Window".
IMHO either "autologin" with both "remembered", or manual login with none; this is just "semiautologin" I guess?

Additionally, this "semiautologin" is not even configured correctly:

For single user, Jaunty used to proceed directly to login window, where I would enter USERNAME and then hit enter, and then to the password screen where I would enter PASSWORD and then hit "Enter" to proceed.

Now in Karmic I get my username automatically entered, but I must hid "enter" to display the password field, and then I enter PASSWORD, and then hit "Enter" again.

Surely if It can find my username automatically, it can see that there is only one, and then it should be able to automatically display the password entry field, saving an unnecessary "Enter" .

Thank you for your bug report, the decision to have an user list is an upstream design choice and not a security issue. You can start a discussion on the lists about that the bug tracker is not the right location since no user will read comments there. There is other bugs describing the fact that it's not easy to toggle the userlist option

Changed in gdm (Ubuntu):
assignee: nobody → Ubuntu Desktop Bugs (desktop-bugs)
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Invalid

THere have been other people than I who agree on this - and OK it's not a security issue, but being that there are others who feel the same I ask that this be reopened and addressed by those upstream (I wouldn't know where to post a comment and to whom) .

ADDITIONALLY, since the last update, one must use the mouse as opposed to the "Enter" key to enable the login window. Those of us with remote mice (non-laptop, non-desk and presentation) or disabled people may not appreciate this change. I ask that there either be a choice in config of this, or it be reverted back as it was previously for now.

right, as said that's a duplicate though

if you want the default to be changed that should be discussed on mailing lists rather

Could we at least keep this bug open as a "wishlist"? It is a regression from 9.04 anyway. It should be configurable to achieve the same behaviour as previously (just type password and hit enter, nothing more), even if it is not the default.
