Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

After version 2.9.0 the -intel driver has dropped support for UMS, and needs KMS enabled in the kernel. The Jaunty kernel has KMS support built in but needs the i915.modeset=1 boot option to enable the KMS support. It is however recommended to install a Karmic kernel instead.

The Karmic kernels have KMS enabled by default.

After latest update, it goes to low graphics mode on startup. says:

Hello ghysmodos,

I had this problem too with the 2.6.28 kernel.

I upgraded to a newer kernel (2.6.30 at least) and followed this guide to enable kernel modesetting:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting (Configuring KMS on Jaunty part)

This solved the problem for me.

It seems you are all using the intel driver from the xorg-edgers ppa.

In this driver support for user mode setting has been dropped. This means you now have to use a kernel with modesetting (KMS) enabled. The easiest way to do this is to install the kernel from the same ppa and reboot using that kernel.

Please read the instructions from the ppa page: https://edge.launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa

I recommend installing a Karmic kernel (the one in the PPA is there just for build purposes).

The warning "This is not a genuine Ubuntu package" is because the PPA packages are not official Ubuntu packages and are not officially supported. I think this is pretty clear from the PPA page. If you have enabled the PPA without reading the PPA page you should complain to the one who instructed you to add the PPA.

Tormod,

Please provide additional info:

What versions are consider karmic kernel?
What stable version do you recommend?
How do I install new kernel?
What is PPA? I was following instructions here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130582

Thanks for your help and patience.

I had a similar problem on the kernel ( http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.30/ ) and my MSI Wind U90x.
I just downloaded ( http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.31.3/ ) and installed (sudo dpkg-i *. deb) for my platform + sources for my VirtualBox.
Easy way. Restart, and now all working.

Sorry for my english :)

You can find the latest kernel here: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux . But first, just boot with the i915.modeset=1 boot option to see if it works with the kernel you already have.

For general user support, try the forums or IRC #ubuntu.

Thanks for this great solution. I stumbled on this solution after filing another bug here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/448825

Now, my screen loads to normal and I have all my 'Extra' compiz effects back. However, I may not close the bug until THIS NEW ISSUE of WLAN is fixed. I guess the 'etc/modprobe.d/dkms.conf' in my own cause [according to instructions in: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting/] is affecting my wlan from loading... I'll try and look into this.

Just to confirm, the work around works, but I can only connect using LAN for now.

Okay.... "This is IT!" I've had enough trouble for a day!

I'm back to 2.6.28 kernel. I don't care about the graphix for now. As long as DKMS works, WIFI works I'll manage this resolution.

2.6.31 kernel is too much of pains!!!!!!!!!!

I can't even get my virtualbox to work! I've spent about 7hours trying to fix my issues...

WOW! It's too much for a SINGLE day's delay! :((

Thanks ergod for the solution!

I upgraded to kernel 2.6.31-12-386 and it works again fine.
I followed the wiki and documented the steps (in German) here: http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/nach-update-nur-noch-low-graphics-mode/ where people have the same bug.

your right on the 2.6.28-15-generic, it might be to old, in fact here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting they recommend to use "2.6.30-2 kernel (or newer)"

@ ghysmodos:
When you switched to the"2.6.3X-XX kernel" did you have issues with WiFi (assuming you run this on a laptop/desktop with WLAN) ? When I switched to 2.6.31-13-generic, the screen resolution was fixed but I couldn't use my WiFi again.

My issues are posted here http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8091428&postcount=6.

Am I the only one with this issue???

I couldn't even get the 'Linux-headers" for the '2.6.31-13-generic' thus I couldn't compile stuff.

Right now, I'm back to 2.6.28-15-generic which has it's WiFi working fine, but screen is way too ugly.

Well i`ve got this issue too (Acer TravelMate 2353, 2.6.28-15 and xorg-edgers intel drivers).
Why don`t you post an instruction on how to downgrade to the version of the xserver-xorg-video-intel which is not affected by this bug? At least as a temporary workaround for those who don't want to upgrade the kernel.
(As for me, I don't want to upgrade the kernel because of the WiFi problems)
Thanks in advance :)

For xorg-edgers Jaunty, I have now uploaded the 2.9.0 version (backport of stock Karmic version). Since the post-2.9.0 versions had the ~ in their version (2.9.0~git...) this new package will override those.

Since so many people are using xorg-edgers on Jaunty who obviously should not be using it, I am tempted to leave Jaunty at 2.9.0 (with UMS) and only update Karmic and Lucid from now on.

xserver-xorg-video-intel (2:2.9.0-1ubuntu2~jaunty) jaunty; urgency=low

  * No-change rebuild of current karmic version
  * Thanks for reading the changelog:
  * !! !!
  * !! This is the last version with UMS support !!
  * !! For the 2.9.0+ versions you will need a !!
  * !! kernel with KMS enabled (see LP: #447181) !!
