Bug Description

My Samsung Q20 Laptop (Intel Graphics Chipset) hangs in 50% of cases when I change the brightness of the display when X-Windows is running. Recovery is not possible, the computer does not react anymore, the last picture on the screen freezes with some glitches. Only switching the power of helps.

I fogot to mention: This bug happens with the current Ubuntu Dapper and it also happens with the older, stable Ubuntu 5.10 version.

Can you access the machine via ssh while it's frozen?

I tried this now: I opened an SSH connection from my destop computer to my laptop via WLAN. Then I started to change the brightness of the display. After several display brightness changes the laptop crashed and freezed. The open SSH connection freezed too, new connection could not be established. It seems that the whole Kernel hangs.

Hint: Sometimes you need only one brightess change on other days I need ten or more of them to hang the system. Furthermore I never observed the system hanging when beeing in Text-Mode while changing the brightness.

If it happens on 64bit version and it hangs 100 % of time, it's probably duplicate of #65027.

This bug also appears with Ubuntu 7.04 Beta.

This also happens on my HP nx7400 64-bit Ubuntu 6.10. 100% of times when I try to change brigtness. I have tried changing brightness under windows and in bios setup - it works. So the problem is in Ubuntu.

Is this still an issue?

Oh no :) this one does not happen under Feisty. On Edgy I fixed this
following the recommendations on launchpad. But on Feisty this does
not happen.
One thing that happens, however is malfunctioning of suspend to RAM
feature - the laptop suspends and when it resumes the screen is not
backlighted, so I'm afraid to close the lid, as the brightness is not
restored. Maybe there is a fix to this?

Yes, it is still an issue. My machine still crashes as described above when I change the brightness on my Ubuntu 7.04 Laptop.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Thanks for the update. Since you no longer have the hardware to test with, I'm going to go ahead and close this. Thanks.

I had this issue on Ubuntu 7x. Now on the 8x I don't have this issue.
