Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

I have made a fresh install from the <ubuntustudio-9.10-beta-alternate-amd64.iso>.
At first everything worked OK (screenwise, I've had some trouble with grub and pulseaudio).
I then installed the restricted nvidia drivers and rebooted, still everything worked.
Enabled the "Extra" visual effects and those worked too but after the next reboot the screen was all black when changed to graphics mode. Tried rebooting several times with the same result.
Searched the web using another computer and got the tips to uninstall compiz and compiz-core using recovery mode terminal, after this the display started to work again. (all windows were initially stuck in upper-left corner but after changing the visual effects back and forth they started to behave also)

Please tell me if I could provide any additional info

Geee, today the problem reoccured, without compiz being installed anymore (sorry for the accusation).
Additional observations:
The last messsage printed is about starting the cups deamon, after that the screen goes black (changes from text to graphics mode?) and also the harddisk rattle completely stops. Ctrl-Alt-Fx or Ctrl-Alt-Backspace has no effect.
I uninstalled the nvidia driver end ended up wioth a totally unstable flickering text prompt so I reinstalled the driver again and got back to the "black mode".
I then tried "dpkg-reconfigure -p high xserver-xorg" to try to reset the x server from the recovery prompt and then it was possible to reboot into normal/GUI mode again.
If anybody knows what package that should have the blame, feel free to reassign it.

After some more usage, I can see that the system is still unstable. Sometimes it boots OK, sometimes it ends up with a black screen. I'v been searching through the logs and found that when the black screen appears there are no logs saved, just empty files (at least this goes for dmsg.0 and xorg.0.log)...

Hi Pedro,
