I was browsing the catalog whilst installing the samba package. software-center kept running, but repeated the crash every time I tried to install anything else.
Ubuntu 9.10 daily.

Found the cause : the install cd-rom was enabled in the repositories, disabling it stopped the crashes.
This is a funny one, as I don't have a karmic CD - I installed using a USB stick with a daily build iso on it - is this another bug in itself?.
