Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

Using Empathy 2.28.0, I set up an XMPP account and was able to establish Jabber text communication with 3 communication partners. On the next day the Empathy contact list did not show any communication partner names. Instead it reports: "<email address hidden>; Name in use."
This reminds me on http://wiki.ubuntu.com/EmpathyVsPidginUsability
'~$ uname -a; Linux T43 2.6.31-11-generic #38-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 2 11:55:55 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux'.
'~$ apt-cache policy ekiga
ekiga:
  Installed: 3.2.5-1ubuntu1
  Candidate: 3.2.5-1ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 3.2.5-1ubuntu1 0
        500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status'
I expect that the error message disappears, that I will see the buddy list in the Empathy Contact List window.
It happens instead that I see an error message and no buddy list.

I noticed that calling Empathy by clicking Applications > Internet > Empathy Instant Messenger
will not produce any new window nor applet but starts a process. Only clicking this sequence a second time will produce the "Contact List" window.

Could you send the bug to GNOME?

It seems empathy add parameter "param-register=true" to every new jabber account in config file .mission-control/accounts/accounts.cfg
if i edit this file, this parameter will recover on next launch of empathy.

i just remove all jabber accounts, then update empathy today to
2.28.1.1-0ubuntu1 (it is newer than 2.28.1-1ubuntu1 and it is in
karmic-proposed repository), then add jabber accounts and bug has gone.

In my opinion, the UI around adding a Jabber account is at worst misleading, and at best unclear.

When adding a Jabber account, you're presented with two radio buttons, one of which says "create new account" and the other "reuse an existing account." This is confusing because, you're creating the record of the account in Empathy, so you're "creating an account" in that sense. That's how I ran into this issue. Technically, maybe it's not a bug, but it felt like one.

One way to fix this would be to remove those radio buttons and default to reusing an existing account. You could then have a separate button or link that says "Create an account..." and goes to a different UI.

I see two different bugs worth of a discussion going on here. The original bug report is going on about jabber problems, and one wishlisting how it should be different. Both are legit, but the wishlist one should be filed separately, and if the original bug is still a problem i should be sent upstream as per sebastiens original request.
