Trash applet don't list items trashed on mounted removable devices

Bug Description

In GNOME your "current" trash contents is collected by the contents of ~/.Trash hidden directory and the contents on all .Trash hidden directories on toplel directory of mounted removable devices (for example /media/usbdisk/.Trash/)

It seems that trash applet lists in its tooltip only items from ~/.Trash directory

** How to reproduce **

Lets me assume you have one item in your trash from ~/.Trash. Moving your mouse over trashapplet the tooltip says "1 item in trash".

Now mount your usb stick, and move to trash a file from here. If you open the Trash you should see 2 items in it. But if you move your mouse over the trashapplet, the tooltip says "1 item in trash".

Now, move a file from your home directory to trash. There are now 3 items in your Trash window, but the trashapplet tooltip says "2 items in trash".

** Notes **

I suspect trashapplet checks files only in hardcoded ~/.Trash directory instread trash:// URI.

Also I suspect it could be an upstream issue, but 'cause by now I don't have any upstream build of gnome-applets but only the one from Ubuntu, I'm opening this bug here. If so, please move the bug to bugzilla.gnome.org (or ask me to do it).

Cheers, Luca.

I believe that in Dapper, the prefered behaviour is to immediatly delete files from a removable device and skipping the .Trash folder (because if you don't empty the trash before removing the device, space is still occupied)

I may be wrong but I believe that I've seen this behaviour in Dapper.

If this is the case, this bug is no more relevant. (Unfortunatly, I don't have an USB key to test)

Thank you Luca. The trash applet doesn't bug fine with removable medias, we have some bugs about it: bug #43996 and bug #35834 claim that it counts the USB stick crash but doesn't update on eject, bug #32466 has the same issue as you, I'm marking that bug as duplicate of it. We don't have any patch for that applet so that's an upstream issue

That's known upstream too:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=171720
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=302536
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=325834

There is probably some cleanup work to do on that if somebody wants to work on it...

Lionel, that's the plan, cf bug #12893 but not done yet

Changed in gnome-applets:
assignee: nobody → desktop-bugs
status: Unconfirmed → Rejected
