Bug Description

~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release: 9.10

I installed Kubuntu Karmic Alpha 4 release and I have kept it up to date since then. The problem I am reporting has occurred twice so far. Basically what happens is my laptop fan stops working. Normally when I am not doing much and the CPU temp is low, the fan stops and when it heats up the fan starts up again. But on these 2 occasions, for reasons I do not know, the fan did not start up when the CPU heated (while playing Farmville :\ ) which leads to the laptop eventually powering down to prevent my CPU becoming toast.

I cannot relate this to any causing event... apart from Farmville :\ The first time I was playing in FF and the second time I was playing in Chromium. This has not happened before and hasn't happened on my main installation which is Linux Mint 6 Fluxbox CE... which is based on Ubuntu Intrepid. The only binary driver I am using is for my Broadcom wireless card. I do not have KDE effects turned on (no OpenGL support for my SiS integrated graphics) and the only system change I made was to enable middle clicking in the top right corner of the touchpad in the hal synaptics configs. Otherwise, everything is the default Kubuntu Karmic setup with some extra packages installed (Chromium, WINE, etc.)

Here is some system info.

~$ sudo lshw

I have the same issue on Acer Aspire 5720Z. I have read about Acer related ACPI bugs a lot and all of the descriptions seem slightly different, some people say their fan is on all the time, some have problems after second suspend, the one above seems to be closest to what I experience and I can say that the problem for me appeared only after upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic (Released version, not alpha or beta).

Please let me know what other information would be helpful.
Thanks.

Installed Karmic on a Acer Aspire 5315 over the weekend. System started shutting down randomly. Finally, I saw a CPU over temp warning in dmesg. This turned out to be the cause of the shutdowns. With Karmic installed, I never heard the fan kick on at all. Reverted to a backup of Jaunty and fans ran as expected.

Installed Karmic on a Dell Inspiron 1525 when it came out. No problems for the first few days; started shutting down randomly while watching videos, but I only just figured out what was the cause after checking the syslog and realising the fan was really loud.

Hi Shane,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 435163

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
