ATI open-source driver, compiz, dual head background problems

Bug Description

I'm running Ubuntu Jaunty with the ati open-source driver that comes with the distro. The video card in my laptop (Lenovo T60) is listed as:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M52 [Mobility Radeon X1300]

Single and dual-head work great with compiz turned off. Compiz works well with just the laptop screen. I have one problem with it set to dual-head. The background image turns totally black and I get these artifacts when I move windows around. They are broken images of other windows. I'll attach an image that shows what I am seeing. Besides that, all the desktop effects work great.

Hi patrick-lepore,

Thanks for including an image to demonstrate the issue. Could you also please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log or Xorg.0.log.old file from after reproducing this issue. If you've using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

X started crashing whenever I'd try to turn compiz on. It seems ok now after the most recent kernel update. I'll be able to test it out again tomorrow.

I no longer have a lenovo t60 laptop to test this on so I can't reproduce it. I'm not sure why I'd mark it as fixed release if I can't reproduce it. I'm someone else with that kind of laptop could try.

Since the hardware is no longer available for doing troubleshooting with, we'll have to close the bug for now. However please feel free to reopen if you or anyone else has the same HW and can reproduce this issue using the latest development version of Ubuntu and is willing to do some troubleshooting with it.

I just upgraded my T60p to maverick and experience the same behaviour with the open source ati driver from maverick repo:

Single Screen (1680x1050) works with compiz, fast as before.

If I plug in my secondary screen, set it to 1440x900 compiz keeps running, desktop effects all still work, but are very slow. No screen/window corruption, but the desktop turns black. Switching back to metacity lets the desktop reappear.

Will attach xorg.conf, Xorg.log and lspci output in a minute.

This bug does not occur when I boot from maverick live CD. Since I upgraded my system since hardy, I consider a reinstall. Any ideas to how to find the source of this bug?
