I am facing this issue in Gutsy 7.10
When I enable the Ubuntu restricted driver for nVIDIA and reboot the screen becomes blank. The only way to recover is to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf and set the driver back to default - nv.

The hardware on the Toshiba TE2100 is NV17 [GeForce4 420 Go]

I have even tried using the Envy package to install the nVIDIA drivers but same issue. I read somewhere in the forums that we should disable splash screens to make it work but I have not tried it.

Hi,
I have a Toshiba TE2100 - GeForce4 420 Go - and this is still an issue with Ubuntu 8.10. The screen is blank. I have seen in some forums that an external LCD monitor, attached to the laptop, displays (the login screen, etc.); I have been unable to confirm this though.

Hi Thanks for the update. But I no longer have this hardware ( it was stolen
! ) so will not be able to check if the issue has disappered in the latest
release.

Thanks again

Booting with nosplash appears to work around the issue if using the proprietary drivers.
