Abiword 2.8.2 from sid to ubuntu works and does not fall, but all
versions abowords continually smear the text in Cyrillic. Need to
scroll the page or highlight(select line) the text, that he came back
to normal. :-(

Same issue with my old documents created with AbiWord / Ubuntu 8.04 that I try to open with AbiWord 2.6.8 / Ubunutu 9.10.

With few documents AbiWord crashes immediatelly at loading. For the others it can load it but it crashes at any gadget or menu use attempt.

Issue has been fixed by removing 'pulseaudio' Ubuntu 9.10 sound control system.
My Ubuntu 9.10 is now using old 'alsa' sound control system.

I don't understand how a sound control system bug can have a so wrong effect on
a word processing application.

More information regarding my system :
  - Kernel 2.6.31-20-generic #57-Ubuntu SMP Mon Feb 8 09:02:26 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
  - PulseAudio 0.9.19-0ubuntu4.1
  - AbiWord 2.6.8-5ubuntu2
  - /home data partition keeps to migrate from Ubuntu 8.04 to 9.10

That would be pulseaudio crashing again. I don't know how it is connected, but it is the cause and a bug should be filed against pulseaudio for that.

Okay, my day for bad information. The real story is "Do NOT file a new bug."

I am closing it because the bug has been fixed in the latest development version of Ubuntu - Lucid Lynx. It won't be fixed in previous versions of Ubuntu because the package doesn't fit the requirements for backporting. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports for more information.

AbiWord hooks into the GNOME system for sound events. You can set
things like emit a beep when a document opens. Hence the connection to
pulseaudio.

In my opinion, a fix for next Ubuntu release is not enough :
 - this is a major bug for Abiword which is unusable for existing document on Karmic Koala.
 - Abiword can not stay in this state until the next Ubuntu release. Please, think to users which really use it daily.
 - it is not correct to force user to upgrade to next Ubuntu version because a single component which is not reliable and which won't be stabilized (Abiword or PulseAudio).

I also think this problem fix should be managed by AbiWord team, possibly by discussing with PulseAudio developers for a fix.
There is a major consequence for this application and it would be a wrong strategy to let to many users think that AbiWord is not reliable enough to choise it.

Ubuntu team pays very little attention abiword/gnumeric. A stable
version can be obtained only with the updating of the distribution, but
not when it produces abiword team. The world has not converged wedge to
OpenOffice.

Okay, looking things over, there is a new version of goffice out. There are new versions of abiword and gnumeric.

If you need a fix for the bug in previous versions of Ubuntu, please do steps 1 and 2 of the SRU Procedure [1] to bring the need to a developer's attention. The SRU will need to cover both goffice and abiword.

I also had this problem with Abiword every time I clicked on a menu. I used Synaptic to uninstall pulsaudio which also uninstalled ubuntu-desktop. Then I installed everything for ALSA I could find in Synaptic. I just mean ALSA not the plugins and stuff to media players and stuff. Then I rebooted.

Abiword works perfectly now. Before uninstalling pulsaudio I was also having a problem with the panels locking up sometimes when I'd boot up Ubuntu. That problem is gone now. May be the best thing to do is just uninstall pulsaudio.

No need to uninstall pulsaudio, in Gnome use "Multimedia Systems Selector" to set Alsa as default Audio Output Plugin.

To access this tool it needs to be enabled in the menu, right click on menu, Edit Menus, it can be found under System->Preferences.

Hi, in cheese we have a similar issue with pa_tls_set crashes with no apparent reason. I believe there could be a bug in LP too but don't have a link at hand now.
You say it is fixed in Lucid. Has it been fixed in abiword? or in pulseaudio? could you please point me to the fixing commit or to a changelog who explains it? Thank you, and sorry for hijacking this bug.

For the record, this symptom is *not* a PulseAudio bug. As I've explained on irc, calling xmlCleanupParser() multiple times does bad things, including deleting pulse's TLS variable. Lennart has posted *twice* now about this symptom:

Aborted

I tried Craig Barnes' sugestion to use "Multimedia Systems Selector" to set Alsa as default Audio Output Plugin.

It had no effect for me.

I view Abiword as a core application and worthy of a backport. Please backport it. Otherwise it adds one more reason to not use pulseaudio.
