Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

-At times when I try to open a document with OpenOffice (just today it happened with Writer, but last week it was Spreadsheet) my screen goes 'wild' on me (it showed all windows, desktop background, widgets, randomly 'mixed') [edit: I think "graphic corruption" would be an appropriate way to explain this]
-The cursor+keyboard are stuck for a few seconds, then work again for about a second, then are stuck again, etc.
-Last time I was listening to some music and it kept playing.
-Eventually I managed to shut down the system the 'normal' way, except it took me a while (as moving the cursor was hard) and the screen was "graphically corrupted".
-Ctrl+Alt+Backspace would probably have worked, except I didn't manage to press these at a time when the keyboard was responsive (I suppose).
-Logs showed an error in 'NVRM: Xid', but I've never encountered this except for when opening documents with OOo:

Hi pveurshout,

Thanks for including the attached files. Could you also include your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (or Xorg.0.log.old) from after reproducing the issue?

Unfortunately I don't know how to reproduce the crash. It seems to happen at random occasions when opening OOo instead of each time (today I managed to open OOo at least ten times and it all went fine), but I'll be sure to add this file the next time it happens.

It crashed again, this time while opening a .pdf document, though (this has never happened before). Same kind of problems, seems definately related to X now.

Attached is Xorg.log (the old one - from before the crash)

The following was in kern.log just before it crashed:

I just had the same kind of problem again, in OOo Writer, when I was scrolling down a document. It had worked fine all day long, but X hang for about 10 seconds. The following message was in the logs and apart from this it all seems to work fine again:

kernel: [39955.836585] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 8, Channel 00000003

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could test the current Ubuntu development version? It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect 429011

Jaunty 9.04 will be End Of Support (EOS) on 2010-10-23, so it is suggested that if you are still using this version, please upgrade your system. The latest development version, Maverick Meerkat, is now in the final week of testing before it is released as 10.10.

Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
