Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-app-install

For some reason all the category names in gnome-app-install appear untranslated (Accessories, Education, Games, Graphics, Internet, Office, Other, Programming, Sound & Video, System Tools, Universal Access). Why are they not being imported directly from gnome-menus, which contains exactly those strings? If that can't be done, at least make them available for translation. This is a very visible part of the UI. Please make this a high priority issue, upload a new, complete translation template to Rosetta.

I can reproduce this problem here, but I don't know how to get these strings marked as candidates for translation. The only place they appear in the g-a-i source is test/data/desktop/applications.menu.

This only happens if the user running gnome-app-install has a different locale than the user running update-app-install (usually root), as the localized names are cached. Try running update-app-install with the locale you want and the names should be translated. This issue is known for some time already, but no-one really worked on it.

I can not reproduce the problem.

On my system, both Software Center and gnome-apps-install have the categories translated.
