Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Problem to set up dual monitor using Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. I am dealing with fresh install of the system. I try to set up dual monitor video output for my laptop. I try to do it with graphical interface (System -> Preferences - > Display).
After unchecking option "Mirror screens", setting proper resolution and position of both monitors and trying to apply the changes, both monitors become completely black. At the left side edge of the left monitor, there is 1-2 pixel-wide stripe of some image, seems to be the rest of desktop. Mouse cursor, however, is fully available and could be moved through both screens. After this happens, I can't change terminal to kill xorg. System refuses to restart and only the way is to shut down the computer and turn it on again.

The resolutions I try to set:
LVDS1 (laptop monitor) 1024x768
VGA1 (external monitor) 1280x1024, 1152x864, 1024x768 - neither works.

The resolution of both displays is detected correctly and GUI tool show them correctly. The same configuration tried in Windows XP and Fedora 11 works perfectly. Such setting for the displays works well also for Ubuntu 9.04, but the system was extremely slow.

When one of the monitors is off, the other works well on any resolution.

Detail info:

System version:
Description: Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release: 9.10

Xorg version:
apt-cache policy xorg
xorg:
  Installed: 1:7.4+3ubuntu5
  Candidate: 1:7.4+3ubuntu5
  Version table:
 *** 1:7.4+3ubuntu5 0
        500 http://cz.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Video card:
lspci -nn | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller [8086:2592] (rev 03)

Computer: IBM Lenovo X41 tablet
Architecture: i386

How to reproduce:
1). Go to System->Preferences->Display
2). Uncheck option "Mirror screens"
3). Make sure both displays are on
4). Press button "Apply"

What happens:
Screen gets black on both displays.
1-2 pixel thin vertical stripe appear on the left side of the left monitor, with probably the part of desktop.
Mouse cursor is available and freely moves through both displays.

What should happen:
The video should be outputted on two monitors independently, with a mouse cursor moving between two screens (usual dual monitor output).

Thanks for fixing this in advance.
I can provide more information, if you need.
I am NOT sure that the problematic application is Xorg.
Sorry also for my poor English.

Hi s-pochekailov,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you're using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

I am also having this same problem. s-video is what's doing it.

Both screens go blank, 'cept that small strip of color in the upper left corner of monitor #1(laptop screen)

I can still see the mouse, and the only thing I can do is restart with the power button. It's incredibly annoying.

I'm on a Lenovo 3000 n100 0768-36U, using an intel chipset, 945gm.

Hi!

This bug was known before I claimend it and the solution was already found. Only the thing you have to do is before setting the resolution, disable desktop effects (compiz). That worked for me. Details see also here:

This bug report has been inactive for quite some time and in the meantime Ubuntu has moved along. I hope the reported problem has been resolved in the current version of Ubuntu. If it has not and there are people willing to follow up with information collecting and testing, it is best to file a new bug report with the latest Ubuntu development version (10.04 still works, but soon 10.10 is better), using the ubuntu-bug command if possible. Feel free to mention the bug number of this bug.

We are sorry that we are not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. Occasionally we have to purge old bug reports where no progress has been made, whether it is due to reporter not being able to respond or lack of manpower on the Ubuntu side, in order to keep our list of "active" bugs current. Sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.

Here are a few tips that will make it easier for triagers and developers to process your bug:
* Read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting
* Browse https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X and see if there is some relevant information for you problem
* Respond quickly to questions from triagers
* Try changing things to see if the behaviour changes, e.g.
  * A new mainline kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=M;O=D (more information at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds)
  * The xorg-edgers PPA: https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa
  * Various options in `/etc/X11/xorg.conf` (see `man intel`)
* Browse other bug reports to see if you find a similar one and provide the information that is being asked for there.
