Are you sure that mysql was running correctly before the package
upgrade? If so there should mysql related messages in the /var/log/daemon.log.*
files.

Hello,
Yes, I know it was running because I was using it to test trouble ticket and
hardware management systems when I was running 9.04. Since upgrading to
9.10, I've been getting the error when upgrading packages. Going to
/etc/init.d and starting mysql, I get the following error:

./mysql start
 * Starting MySQL database server mysqld
                                         [ OK ]
/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'debian-sys-maint'@'localhost' (using
password: YES)'
