Running ALSA-Mixer from Terminal shows the Realtek ALC883 chip, HDA ATI SB motherboard sound package, but I am unable to get _any_ sound from Karmic. Sound had worked since I started with Gutsy, although PulseAudio since Intrepid had been problematical. Going to try disabling PulseAudio and going back to ALSA to see if that works.

@Pedro Have you installed linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic and rebooted?

I had installed with only a single user besides root. Using the guide to sound problems on the Ubuntu Forums, I added a different user. The new user sound works on my system. Now I just have to dig into what the differences are between the users.

Try rm -rf ~/.pulse*

I tried the rm -rf ~/.pulse*
Still no sound. System > Preferences > Sound does not detect any sound hardware with the default user.

@cwsnyder
Please file a separate bug using "ubuntu-bug alsa-base" in a Terminal
if you have not already done so.

I finally copied the ~/.pulse folder from an alternate user I set up to check if it was just the default user which had the problems with no sound. That fixed my problem, but I don't know why the alternate user worked and the original (default) user did not.

For me, this worked. When I made the new user, the sound was muted as it was. I turned it up and it worked for the new user, copying .pulse made it work for me (though Playback/recording through the pulseaudio sound server is now grayed out in kde settings). Maybe it's wrong signals going through.

Note that it worked for me before, just yesterday did it stop, but it's OK with the workaround.

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p alsa-base 414897

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
