Draging to resize, or double-click to full screen makes Movie Player dissapear

Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

Totem closes while attempting to resize or full screen the window; via drag or double-click. However, on occasion it will squash an anamorphic widescreen movie into a 4:3 full screen (everything is tall & thin). Attempts to resize either remain squashed or close Totem altogether.

This only happens with actual DVD discs. I've been playing movies I ripped to .avi (xvid & .AC3) without error.

I am using Ubuntu 9.04 and am a total noob...working on converting from "Windoze" (advanced with that, so any translative language would be much appreciated).

I followed some forum threads about installing codecs and upgrading programs.

Please advise...

I really want to provide you with this info, but I keep running into a
problem with several things I try to do in Ubuntu; in this case making
changes to my source list.

This is obviously a noob problem. When I try to go somewhere to edit or
access a file, I often get "Permission denied". My only way around this is
when I luck out and am prompted for my password to gain admin privileges.
However I haven't figured out the magic command or process to say to my
OS, "I want to do such and such as admin NOW!"

I know I could just do the GRANT *.* thing to my profile, but I'm trying
to stay more secure than that.

Can you help me with that info?

Thanks!

Thanks for the sudo tip Sebastien! That connected a lot of dots for me. I'm
a little closer now, but still stuck.

Here's what I tried in the terminal:

 sudo /etc/apt/sources.list

 sudo /filesystem/etc/apt/sources.list

Each of those returned; 'Command not found', or 'location unknown' or
something like that. I think I discovered that / is the root, so adding
'filesystem' is just redundant. Am I right?

Then just tried doing the old cd drill-down method, just as I would with
Windows. I successfully changed directory to /etc/apt but now cannot figure
out open sources.list from there.

I drilled down in the GUI by going to Places -> Computer and opened the
sources.list file in text editor, but then I don't have the permissions to
save changes after adding the lines your link instructed.

A thousand apologies for my noobness. At this point I'm still all drive and
no vector...

- John

Sorry about the delayed response.

Tried the instructions on the KB page, but couldn't update as the attempt
returned this:

Type 'gpg' is not known on line 65 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list,
E:The list of sources could not be read

I also got this same error when tying to run the update manager.
