Weird, I don't see anything in your Xorg.0.log that would suggest DRI or GLX is malfunctioning. Can you also attach the output of 'glxinfo | grep -i render' to see if you've got SW rendering going on? If not, by chance are you running metacity with compositing turned on? (Compiz has a bug that it crashes when compositing is on; you can work around it by running 'compiz --replace' from an xterm).
