Bug Description

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

I had sound working perfectly in 8.10. Upon update to 9.04, I get sound when the desktop starts up, but then nothing when I try to watch a movie or listen to music with totem, mplayer, or VLC. Inspecting PulseAudio Device Chooser, I see that its source for my audio jack output is labeled "auto_null.monitor". Checking the volume meter for Playback tells me that it is looking for information regarding "Null Output". Input works fine. It looks for "HDA Intel - ALC883 Analog".

Description: Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)
Release: 9.04

pulseaudio:
  Installed: 0.9.13-1ubuntu3
  Candidate: 0.9.13-1ubuntu3
  Version table:
 *** 0.9.13-1ubuntu3 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Pulseaudio should be looking for a device other than "Null Output" and assign that as an audio source so that I can get sound.

peternix: could you try to open a console and look if "alsamixer -c 0" shows some muted channels?

They are all muted, other than Master, PCM, and Front, which are all at 100.

Matteo,

Thank you for the help. Here is what I have found. After a reboot, running alsamixer -c 0, and looking at [Playback]:

  Master: 100 [db gain=0.00]
  Headphone: off
  PCM: 0<>0 [dB gain=-58.50, -58.50]
  Mic: 0<>0 [dB gain=-34.50, -34.50]
  Mic Boost: 0<>0
  IEC958: 100 [dB gain=0.00, 0.00]
  IEC958 Default PCM
  IEC958 Playpack Source [PCM]

I also find the headphone and speaker switches turned off.

After using the Volume Control to change the PCM level to 100 (which I see reflected in alsamixer) and turn on the speaker switch, I get sound, as verified by playing a movie through totem and with VMware using oss-compat to provide /dev/dsp.

Peter, see Bug 299093. Does that describe what you're seeing? From your comment about what you're seeing with PulseAudio, perhaps not, but what I mentioned in my responses to that bug fix the "No sound in 9.04" problem for me (after I redo the steps on each reboot), so I thought I'd follow up with you.

Maybe I wronged by setting this as a dupe; I'm a little bit tired this evening. If so, please comment...
I know you probably already checked it, but please also check under "System"->"Preferences"->"Audio", if two different things are set for sound events and music & video.

I think that the duplicate status is wrong because my problem has nothing to do with alsa settings, as I should receive audio as long as master is set to 100, pcm is set to 100, and front is set to 100. I am not using the other audio ports.

Also, under Sound Events, Sound playback is set as "HDA Intel ALC883 Digital (ALSA)", while Music and Movies is set to "Autodetect". Changing it to HDA Intel ALC883 Digital (ALSA) doesn't appear to give me sound, though. :-/

Normally, I'd just say the entire sound system is fscked, except for the simple fact that I get boot up sound [!].

Then sorry for the dupe status, I got confused.
Does launching any of these commands produce any sound or useful errors? Do the pipelines correctly preroll?

gst-launch filesrc location="somefile.ogg" ! decodebin ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! pulsesink
gst-launch filesrc location="somefile.ogg" ! decodebin ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! alsasink
gst-launch filesrc location="somefile.ogg" ! decodebin ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! osssink

Of course, you can use a FLAC, MP3 or whatever else format you prefer.
I expect the osssink element normally to fail, maybe the alsasink too.

What are the contents of ~/.asoundrc, if there is one?
Is the libasound2-plugins package installed?

Thanks.

I doubt this is actually a dupe of Bug #299093, I'm still seeing this
bug. The original description mentions that pulseaudio only sees a null
output which works fine. So pulseaudio is unable to load the alsa
module.

I'm using up to date jaunty (updated 1 or 2 hours ago) and the bug is
still present in my system.

As far as i can see, pulseaudio rejects the output (input is present)
because alsalib fails.

First run is with all lines in /usr/share/alsa/pulse.conf commented and
second one is with the default content in pulse.conf. Also after
restarting pulseaudio with the commented pulse.conf, the output is
present.

I can open a new bug about the issue if it feels like a different bug,
but to me it looks like the same issue.

Regards, Sami

Yes. Reboot didn't change pulseaudio behaviour.

Sami, it's probably best to open a new bug report for your issue. Upgrading to alsa-utils 1.0.18-1ubuntu3 fixed the problem for the reporter, so if you are sure you have this version and you have rebooted, your issue may be different. Thanks.

Mangloid (jthoma2) wrote :

I now have the same issue, Updated from 8.10 ( sound working ) to 9.04. All packages are latest.

Alsa mixer shows the channels are 100.

Under sound preferences I have no sound from any Test, and when I click volume control from the panel, device is listed as "Playback: Null output (Pulse Audio Mixer)"

Rebooting, unloading / reloading Alsa has made no difference.

I do not believe this is a duplicate of bug 299093. That bug was specific to alsa mixer sound levels resetting to 0, which this does not seem to be the case. I am no expert, so please ask what information you would like me to post for you

There's no need to comment in a duplicate of a fixed bug report about your new issue. You are most likely experiencing bug 334299, which has already been fixed.
hello, i've upgraded my ubuntu to the beta and now i haven't any sound. strange thing is i can go to system > pref. > sound, choose my device, click test and it will play sound, just won't play any of my system sounds or music. any help?
ah ha ha, i am godly.

here's the fix chums.

firstly, go to system > admin > system testing
if that crashes, do this
sudo nano /etc/checkbox.d/checkbox.ini
And add
blacklist = backend_manager

to [checkbox/plugins]

then run the system testing again and go through all the test.
*be sure to click the test button, especially on the sound portion*
if all goes well it should set your sound to what works

then go to your pulse audio applet (if you don't have that, go to add/remove applications, sound&video, find all the pulse audio things and install those.)--see 1

once in the applet go to 'volume control' in the 'playback tab click on the little arrow pointing down next to the shield looking thing. then hover 'move stream' and choose one of those options. the second one worked for me, it could be different for everyone.

cheers fellas

1-once you have pulse audio things installed, go to applications > sound & video > pulse audio device chooser. then in your tray, click on the pulse aduio applet and choose volume control, make sure everything is turned up, especially in the 'output devices' tab. close that and choose 'configure local sound server' and in the network access tab check the first 3 boxes. close and finally go to 'preferences' and check the very last box. close and you're done.
