Bug Description

Binary package hint: xfce4-volumed

I just fired up the xubuntu karmic alpha 3 CD, choosing the liveCD option and started the installer when I had a report of the crash. No other action where started.
This happened in a virtual machine, on the 64 bit version of the distrib.

Hello and thanks for your report,

May you please tell me whether or not you have activated sound support for your virtual machine ? It is disabled by default with VirtualBox 2, for instance.

If you launch "xfce4-mixer" (from the LiveCD), does it open normally or does it trigger an error dialog (which would mean there is no support for sound) ?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I'm using Sun Virtual Box 3.0.2 r49928 (Not the OSE). Sound is disabled for this VM.
When I start the LiveCD and try to launch xfce4-mixer, there is an error stating that Gstreamer is unable to find the sound device.

Also, when starting the terminal (xfce4-terminal), the sound manager crashed. I dit not create a bug for this since it's probably related, but I can do so if you think that this is important.

I stay available if you need other information.

KR.

Hello,

The crash comes from the fact that you don't have any sound card available,
since sound is disabled. ;)

Thanks for the information.
Isn't it a bit extreme to crash when no sound card is available ?
I guess that testing for the existence of a sound card and exiting (maybe
with an error message) would be more user friendly.
After all, xubuntu targets a market where PC with no sound card available
might still exist.

Anyway, thanks a lot for your help.

KR.

It's not really meant to crash, to tell you the truth. I'll fix it in a few
days. I just wanted to make sure of the cause of the crash.
