Bug Description

I have 2 USB wireless adaptors, one with a zd1211 chipset, and one with a rt73 chipset. Neither will usually connect to my AP when using the latest karmic kernel. When using kernel 2.6.30 both work adaptors work well.

I logged into karmic to get more details for this big report, and wifi is working fine now.

I have the same problem. I think it started happening with the last kernel update, possibly not the kernel, but didn't I get headers and backports or something on Tuesday July 21st?
I have 2.6.31-3-Generic.
I live in an urban area, and most of the time my wife shows about 20 possible connections. Several of them are pretty robust, and mine usually shows nearly 100%.
The last 2 days or so, when I log on, sometimes it takes a while (10-20 seconds) for the wifi to find even mine and the two nearest neighbors. Then the signal is weak, then it keeps logging me back off for a few seconds and then on again.

This bug was reported against the linux-meta package when it likely should have been reported against the linux package instead. We are automatically transitioning this to the linux kernel package so that the appropriate teams are notified and made aware of this issue.

If this bug really is a bug in the linux-meta package you can move it back to linux-meta and set the Status to Confirmed, or contact us on the #ubuntu-kernel channel on the FreeNode IRC server. Thanks.

Hi Cory!

Not sure about it. Original reporter, comments some weakness on Wifi signal, but he doesn't comment if this behaviour is related to both Wifi adaptors.

Do you have still some Wifi issues?

If so, please, could you run the following command from a
Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) while running Karmic? It
will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this
report.

apport-collect -p linux 403465

After this, there's also other task to do:

Can you please try installing the following package. It contains an
updated compat wireless stack which may help.

linux-backports-modules-wireless-karmic-generic

I'd encourage you to also try installing the latest compat-wireless stack from upstream -
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Download . This will allow us to escalate this issue to the upstream developers. Please let us know your results. Thanks
