Pidgin displays all channels as disconnected

Bug Description

The Pidgin IRC client gets tricked into thinking that all channels are disconnected, although messages keep coming in.

Triggered by Pidgin 2.5.2 + ctrlproxy 3.0.8
Normal behavior with Pidgin 2.5.2 + ctrlproxy 3.0.7
Normal behavior with XChat + ctrlproxy 3.0.8

The only suspicious change in the protocol I could spot is this:

>> :_bernie!<email address hidden> JOIN :#foobar

trinity.develer.com is the address of ctrlproxy, not the client's.
